1980 has been a great year for asian cinema, the last witness is a procedural of the type memories of murder and vengeance trilogy, complicated plot but the ending really puts it over. #ACAB

now i'm in the middle of tianyun mountain, confounding didacticism way beyond stage sisters, lovely color amid cheery revolutionaries

really?? jin xie adds some arty touches. still undecided on the tone here lol

Final--

Khubsoorat (Hrishikesh Mukherjee)
Every Man For Himself (Jean-Luc Godard)
Simone Barbes or Virtue (Marie-Claude Treilhou)
Dressed to Kill (Brian De Palma)
Aakrosh (Govind Nihalani)
The Sword (Patrick Tam Kar-ming)

Saw a couple more that I couldn't quite wrap my head around. Return to the 36th Chamber has the scaffolding sequences which are comparable to the best moments of any of these--or any movie ever, really--but I still struggle figure out Lau Kar-leung's comedy. Thought the Chor Yuens were both solid, I hope we do a poll for him soon. A sidenote: I don't get the Alexander Fu Sheng thing at all; not sure how that's supposed to be a lead actor. Hopefully will see 1 or 2 more this weekend.

If Tsigoineruwaizen is a ghost story where most of the ghosting activity is involved with recovering books and records that the guy lent out during his lifetime, I can to.tal.ly relate to that. The rest of it is a mighty obliquity, though.

Some last minute rec.s:

O Homem que Virou Suco / The Man that Was Turned Into Juice — J. Batista de Andrade -- Brazilian "Marginal Cinema" movement, I reckon. Poet/anarchist everyman gets into trouble everywhere he goes cuz he disrupts power relationships with his irrepressible acting-out. No self-control. It has the rhythms of comedy, but it's usually too sour + miserable to be funny. Thanks, Ralch! It's on youtube with engsubs.

The Ninth Configuration - W P Blatty
The first half-hour of this was so calculatedly wack that it reminded me of Louis Malle's Black Moon. Definitely a "subject for further study"and I hope I find time to finish it (or at least watch enough to form a confident opinion before the Aug 3rd deadline, but no promises.

New poll goes up in a few hours, in case anyone's eager to move on.

EDIT: Also, Forbidden Zone turned out to be a massive cringe, and I'm sorry I suggested it.Can you ever forgive me, Pabs?

Final list. Not exceptionally enthused about some of them, but good enough to pass I guess. Might switch in The Fog or one of many other mildly pleasing diversions for Popeye, not that any of them really matter all that much.

No tallying till Monday; whenever the 1st falls on a weekend... to cosset people who use their weekends in particular for movie-watching purposes.

^^ Too lazy even to write out the complete sentence. Or finish my own ballot yet.

Thanks to the 15 hour time difference between my world and Pacific Time, I've got until 4am the following morning (my time) to squeeze in maybe two more. I've watched only three for this poll, one of which turned out to be from 1981, so it's now disqualified. The two others I watched haven't made my final list.

I've seen at least 10 more 1980 films over the years (i.e., not for this poll), but I'm not putting them on my list as they're too obvious. I absolutely had to make an exception for The Shining and Raging Bull, though, coz they're just too great and deserve to be on every 1980 list imo.

Hope to fit Esthappan in and maybe one more before bed tonight.

Sometimes I wonder if I subconsciously avoid watching films for year polls as a result of feeling a wee bit of pressure to watch them. I know I'm like that already with my own watchlists. If I feel I have to see films, I'll delay watching them even more.

Oh, God, Thoxans... I erased most of the information on my tallysheet about titles with 1-2 votes, so it's almost certain that processing your revision would mean going through the whole 5-6 hour process a second time. Post your revised ballot, and IF I decide that I fucked up the tally and have to do it over anyway, I'll include your new info.
