Innteresting indeed! Always thought of Zhang as a "classical" artist who's primarily a "dreamer" interested in making his art and more or less truly living in that world, and trying to express his life and daily realities through it (a bit like Hitchcock et al). Wouldn't have thought him quite so gullible and prone to being exploited, though.

I've seen 6 movies directed by Zhang Yimou, although one was seen under somewhat difficult circumstances, so that I won't be checking it on icheckmovies until I re-watch it (maybe soon).

Just caught up with The Story of Qiu Ju and it should probably have more votes - a delightful time capsule blending comedy and pathos, with a superb ending which questions what justice is and whether it can ever truly exist. Gong Li is great.

Just caught up with The Story of Qiu Ju and it should probably have more votes
I did what I could and gave it my top slot since it was getting ignored, but that wasn't enough it appears. Glad you also liked it though.
