Actors/Actresses you cherish

Post by greennui »

Cuz we can't just be all negative nellies.

Dan Duryea - No sound sweeter in film noir than a pissy Dan Duryea wanting money that he feels is owed to him.

Marcel Dalio - A French film noir usually set around a port town is basically incomplete without Dalio in a sleazy bit part role.

Ingrid Caven - One of my favs of the Fassbinder troupe. I like her best when she's just mincing around, which I think Guadagnino does as well because that was basically the only thing she was doing in the Suspiria remake.

My most cherished performers tend to be performers who stand slightly askew from the mainline of studio system stardom. Character actors and/or stars whose stardom is about more than their capacity to arouse you or be a sexual role model.

There are so many I cherish. Just limiting myself to those I've been particularly appreciating this past year:
  • Edward G. Robinson, the left-wing asexual-spectrum intellectual's movie star
  • Deanna Durbin, the childhood friend of my dreams
  • Margaret Rutherford, my role model, I can't wait to be an old spinster solving crimes
  • Gabby Hayes, S.Z. Sakall, Edward Everett Horton, and a number of similar character actor types
  • Bela Lugosi and Lionel Atwill, two of the greatest performers Hollywood and sub-Hollywood Poverty Row horror ever had, and I confess to having developed sincere crushes on both

And I've only seen him in three movies (one of them scripted but not directed by Luis Bunuel), but today I'm crushing out on the comic energies of Argentine actor Pepe Iglesias. He's sort of like Groucho and Harpo inhabiting the same body... but he may not have much range; he played an identical character in one of the others if not both.

EDIT: Plus Peter Lorre, of course...and Isabela Corona...
The opposite of 'reify' is... ?

Every list brings new "I can't believe I forgot X" reminders. Cary Grant, Jean Arthur, Anton Walbrook...

Absolutely... and I also appreciate a few of those reminders, including Laird Cregar, Gunnar Bjornstrand, and Marie Dressler. I'm working on a more comprehensive list to post in WBA's Actor/Actress threads, but it might take some time because I don't want to leave any favorites off this time.

Don't worry, I'm also still working on it, and it takes a lot of time. :drinking:

OMG I CAN"T BELIEVE I FORGOT

Frank Morgan
James Cagney -- I was late to appreciation of his genius.
William Powell
Myrna Loy -- let no one presume on their good fortune until they find a spouse who looks at them the way Myrna Loy looks at William Powell
Sissy Spacek
George C. Scott
that little boy in BICYCLE THIEVES
Julie Walters -- I sat through that final Harry Potter thing for the SOLE PURPOSE of hearing her deliver one single line of dialogue, and her genius did not disappoint.
John Cazale
Anthony Quinn
