Summer's Tales

Post by greennui »

Another seasonal thread, this time I'm looking for films that capture the breezy fleetingness or the fleeting breeziness of summer. Examples:

Rohmer is obviously the OG (Pauline at the Beach, A Summer's Tale, La Collectionneuse, My Girlfriend's Boyfriend and etc...)
Du côté d’Orouët (Rozier)
A Brighter Summer Day (Yang)
At the First Breath of Wind (Piavoli)
Elvira Madigan (Widerberg)

Great idea for a thread! Rohmer is obviously the master as you've said, and kenji seems to agree. For your perusal:

A much less breezy film but Do the Right Thing immediately came to mind. Ditto for Wake In Fright.

Oh, how about Alle Anderen or Mein langsames Leben?

a few random films with summer or summer-related words in the title that seemed like they might fit your criteria when i glanced at their plot descriptions. i've only seen the first two though so i might be completely wrong about the rest of them :)

July Rain (Marlen Khutsiyev)
Late August, Early September (Olivier Assayas)
Capricious Summer (Jiri Menzel)
Summertime (David Lean)
Summer Time Machine Blues (Katsuyuki Motohiro)
A Summer at Grandpa's (Hou Hsiao-Hsien)
Summer Light (Jean Gremillon)
In the Summertime (Ermanno Olmi)
Summer Holiday (Rouben Mamoulian)
A Summer Place (Delmer Daves)
Summer of Happiness (Arne Mattsson)

Most def. The closing song, Decadence by Kevin Ayers is a song that I seem to return to every summer.

I've been torn on watching Picnic on the Grass all month. I want a colorful film titled picnic on the grass to be sensuous yet it's directed by Renoir, so I just know it's gonna be a farce that I won't vibe with, kinda like A Day in the Country.

It's both a not particularly funny farce and quite sensuous so YMMV.
