Got to some stuff I've been meaning to check out for a while now:

Ma$e - Harlem World
how is the most celebrated album of only member of CotC who can go toe-to-toe with Big L on tracks... so banal? seriously boring, the tracks with Busta and Jay-Z were ok. whatever. i'm pretty disappointed in this. also late 90s rap albums really need fewer skits, this is just a science

Dowsing - It's Still Pretty Terrible
this is pretty great, and i definitely need to listen to more 4th wave emo. Littoral and Midwest Living are stand-out tracks, and i love when two bangers like that hit back-to-back essentially creating one ultra carmenic (tbh just making up that word rn) experience. but the whole album is incredibly listenable, if maybe a bit more indebted to pop melodies than i like in my emo. very fun

Camping in Alaska - Please Be Nice
i don't know why i listened to this, it's pretty minor but i really liked the one track i'd heard (Dragon Ball Z Budokai Tenkaichi 4). however after listening to the whole record that is still the only track i really like. whatever. can't really go wrong with this genre, i find emo often very valuable on first listen even if u don't think it'll have staying power in your rotation

I rarely listen through albums these days but I found myself relistening to the classic Chinoiseries by Onra in it's entirety the other day for the first time in years.

Spoiler!

More midwest emo revival

Moose Blood - "I'll Keep You In Mind from Time to TIme"
I'd already heard Gum, and that is the best part. Bukowsski would be great if not boringly dude-ish in its literary references. Bukowski and Hemingway? What colour are your bedsheets bro? Red? Get out of town kid.

Modern Baseball
- "Sports" 2012
- "You're Gonna Miss It All" 2014
- "Holy Ghost" 2016

Like pretty much any emo act it gets less interesting as it goes along. Sports is actually really listenable cover to cover, and I'd already heard The Weekend but not @chl03k, which is the perfect second act to that shit, very millenial

Second one started off great but I've listened twice now and it's sort of just a blur after that. No real fluctuation in the notes it hits. But the drop from track one to track two is pretty great. This showed potential. Then the 2016 one was just like the 2014 one minus the first two excellent tunes on the 2014 one. Disappointing showing boys

And finally some more
Dowsing - I Don't Even Care Anymore
Only listened to this once and I'm gonna listen to it again because I generally liked but wanna see if anything sticks to more on a second listen.

Comus - First Utterance (1971)
don't know much about this sort of stuff but i love emerson lake and palmer, anyway, this is amazing. not sure if it's intended as such but one of the realest depictions of mental illness i've ever seen expressed in art. i think it's probably a little more universal than that, but maybe that's actually just pretty universal. something for me to think about. anyway, i love this and it's in my t40 albums i reckon

don't know why this has been hitting for me a lot these days but i've been listening to coil's last full album the ape of naples, both in full and songs individually. it's a kind of hodge-podge of late recordings, when singer jhon balance was alive and assembled after his death, but there is a real continuity to it, even more so when you think of it as someone who loved him putting it all together.

Selvaggina, Go Back Into the Woods was interesting, but I feel like it's just a slightly worse version of the deluxe edition of Black Antlers. Jhonn's performance in ...And the Ambulance Died in His Arms is so emotional.

first album by Choo-ja Kim. It's one of my favorites, and one I love to return to again and again:

New Freddie Gibbs is indeed great. I've been listening to this a lot ever since COVID hit England.
