1927 poll

Post by Lencho of the Apes »

Choose your favorite films from 1927 (according to IMDb).

– Each person votes for up to 20 movies. Do not feel compelled to fill the maximum allowable number, if you're enthusiastic about fewer than twenty.
– Do not rank the films except the number 1, it gets two points..

Users are urged to post their provisional lists as soon as possible so that others may use them for recommendations. You may, of course, revise your lists at any point prior to the deadline.

Ballots posted by new members who have not participated in other parts of the forum will not be counted.

Deadline for 1927 lists will be Monday, June 1st at approximately 1 PM Pacific Time. Or something.

METROPOLIS (Lang)
BERLIN: SYMPHONY OF A GREAT CITY (Ruttman)
THE GAUCHO (Jones/Fairbanks)
THE BATTLE OF THE CENTURY (Bruckman)
NAPOLEON (Gance)
THE UNKNOWN (Browning)
LOVE (Goulding)

A first go. A closer look at IMDB will doubtless result in changes. Alas, I only like the first half of SUNRISE, and I found JEANNE NEY decidedly underwhelming. I might need to revisit WINGS and THE LODGER, which don't seem to me to be at the same level as the ones on my list already. Does LOVE really belong there? We'll see. Edited to include L'HOMME DU LARGE, and re-edited to remove L'HOMME DU LARGE.

The Red Mill (Fatty Arbuckle)

marion davies qt af/10.

https://mariondavies.tumblr.com/post/50 ... -mill-1927

Enjoyable enough comedy directed by Arbuckle under a pseudonym, never knew he branched out into feature film directing.

Yeah, I've seen it. I put it with a lot of other movies as being okay but not belonging on my Best Of The Year list -- COLLEGE, THE LODGER, SUNRISE, UNDERWORLD.

I'm feeling like you feel over CHICAGO over BATTLE OF THE CENTURY, the magnificent Laurel & Hardy short featuring the greatest pie fight in cinema history. A great mad symphony of hilarity, restored to most of its original length in the last few years, and coming out on Blu-Ray in the coming months to make life worth living again.
These matters are best disposed of from a great height. Over water.

Chicago rocked! Pre-code y cynicism, almost as smart about news cycles and manufactured celebrity as Sternberg was in An American Tragedy. Fast-moving, "modern," racy...

7th Heaven, though, I'm not too sure about. As much as I love Borzage, this was the first of that string of putative masterpieces, and it felt like he hadn't quite finished working out his ideas. And of all the Hail Mary-ing Hail Marys that have ever hailed Mary, this is just about the Hail Maryest.

this is one of those years from which I've seen very little.
Just 20+ films, so here are the few that I loved:

01. Casanova "Loves of Casanova" (Alexandre Volkoff, France/Germany)
02. Die Weber "The Weavers" (Friedrich Zelnik, Germany)
03. The Beloved Rogue (Alan Crosland, USA)
04. The Lodger: A Story of the London Fog (Alfred Hitchcock, UK)
05. The Kid Brother (Ted Wilde/J.A. Howe, USA)
06. The Ring (Alfred Hitchcock, UK)
07. Le rat de ville et le rat des champs "The Town Rat and the Country Rat" (Wladyslaw Starewicz, France)
