SCFZ Poll: Jacques Becker

Post by flip »

Polling the films of director Jacques Becker

The rules:

- your list can include no more than half of the Becker films you've seen, up to a maximum of 5. So if you've seen seven of his films, for example, you can list only a top 3. It's only if you've seen ten or more of his films than you can list the maximum of five.

- i'll assume ballots are ranked unless you tell me otherwise. unranked ballots are fine.

- deadline for ballots: next Tuesday, in seven days, whatever day that is

- if anyone is watching films for these polls, then i'll extend the deadline three days, if someone requests an extension

- next poll: whoever posts the first ballot in this thread is free to nominate the director we poll next, unless you've nominated in this round already (everyone should get a chance). Already nominated this round: greg x, rischka, dt, silga, kanafani

umbugbene created an index on letterboxd of all of our previous polls here: letterboxd.com/umbugbene/list/index-of-all-scfz-director-polls/

one rule for nominees: at least 3 scfzers need to have seen 10+ of a nominee's films, or at least 4 scfzers need to have seen at least 8 of the nom's films, so if it isn't clear if that will be the case, we'll confirm that's true before moving forward

if 24 hours pass after a poll opens, and no one eligible to nominate has posted a ballot, then i'll nominate someone, and then we'll start over, and everyone will be able to nominate again

this poll depresses me, i haven't been able to see as much becker as i'd like to.

anyway:

Édouard et Caroline
Rue de l’Estrapade

i have 9 epstein but if needed i will happily watch the two more i've been saving (and another also, if someone can find subs for le double amour)

Typically wouldn't bother voting since I have only seen 2, but because it's in my top 5 all time:

To please the majority is the requirement of the Planet Cinema. As far as I'm concerned, I don't make a concession to viewers, these victims of life, who think that a film is made only for their enjoyment, and who know nothing about their own existence.

Wonderful choice. One of my favourite French directors. I've seen seven from him.

1. 'Touchez pas au grisbi'
2. 'Goupi mains rouges'
3. 'Falbalas'

I've only seen three, but I'll cast a single vote for LE TROU (1960).

Well, that had the most jumpcuts of any pre-60's film I've seen, perhaps excepting Jeanne d'Arc. And oh yeah, the lady who introduced the film carefully, if not demonstratively, explained the entire plot, as if under the impression that what she was being paid for was to maximally ruin the experience for the audience.

I love Becker so much, and need to see more. Le Trou is a t100 film for me, and Antoine and Antoinette is a criminally underseen masterpiece
