Best of 2019 and Academy Awards Poll
Best of 2019 and Academy Awards Poll
Now that the Academy Awards nominations are up, it's time for our dual "best of the year" and "Oscars" polls.
For the "Best of 2019" poll:
- post a list of your favourite films from 2019. You can list up to ten films (please only vote for things you think deserve votes) except:
-- if you have seen between 40 and 59 feature films from last year: then you can list up to eleven films
-- if you have seen 60 or more feature films from last year: then you can list up to twelve films
This is to give lesser-seen films (that only those who have seen a lot of 2019 movies might have seen) more of a chance.
- ranked ballots are *strongly* encouraged (if you aren't sure how to rank, maybe rank in reverse-order of letterboxd views, to give less-seen films more weight). Unless you tell me otherwise, I'll assume your ballot is ranked.
- scoring for ranked ballots will be on a 1-2-3-4-...-maximum scale (so a three-film ranked ballot will award 3, 2 and 1 points to the three films)
- unranked ballots will award the same total points as a ranked one would, but of course awarding an equal number of points to each film. So a ten-film unranked ballot, say, will award 5.5 points per film
- you can post a ballot now and edit it later - no need to let me know about changes unless you make changes on the day of the deadline. I won't start tallying until Feb 7 - as usual, I post the results on Academy Award day, which is Feb 9 this year
deadline: Feb 7, 2019 (or maybe Feb 8)
For the never-very-popular Academy Awards poll, using the official nominations, you can vote in any category you like. The rules:
- if you have not seen at least half of the nominees in a category, you can't vote in that category
- for Best Pic, if you have seen 4-5 films, you can post a top two, if you have seen 6-7 films, you can post a top three, and if you have seen eight or all nine, you can post a top four
- for the other categories, you can post a top two list if you have seen 3-4 films, or a top three if you have seen every nominee
- ballots must be ranked, scoring as in the poll above
- for any category that garners two or more ballots, I'll tally the results and we'll award the SCFZ alternative Oscars accordingly

i've seen 8 from 2019, which is a lot for me.
1 midsommar (ari aster)
2 parasite (bong joon-ho)
3 us (jordan peele)
unfortunately, the lighthouse seemed one of the lesser lighthouse movies that i've seen. knives out is the only thing that's relatively mainstream that i'm thinking about watching.

Yes, I changed the rules this year (last year you would have needed to see 20+ features to vote for ten), so you can vote for ten films if you like, and even though I mention features in the intro post, shorts and tv movies are all eligible for the poll (though not tv series).Evelyn Library P.I. wrote: ↑Sun Jan 19, 2020 4:30 pm Yay! iirc flip goes off of imdb/letterboxd release dates, i.e., go to your boxd account > films > sort by decade > 2019 (at least this is how i went about it)

Just edited my 2019 list to include Cats... and I'm not ashamed. I cannot join the bandwagon of mockery for that movie. It's far from flawless, but does it really deserve a 2.8 average score on the IMDb? Once you get past the general weirdness, it's no harder to accept the cat suits than it is when Bert Lahr's wearing one. The railroad tap dancing scene was glorious, and so was the ending. If the movie weren't so unrelentingly dark I'm sure it'd be a bit more popular.

i really don't care for malick (esp late career prolific malick), but i hadn't even heard of a hidden life, so i googled it, and to my surprise i was pleased to find out that there's an arthouse theatre about an hour away from me! not only that, but bellocchio's the traitor will be playing there in the near future! might have to make a little day trip out of it. so thx malick (read: oscarwerner)!

I also liked Mallick from XX Century. The tree of life was still ok for me. Later he dissapointed me greatly. But Hidden Life is again more concrete story, topic. For me it is the best Mallick film after The tree of life.thoxans wrote: ↑Wed Jan 29, 2020 7:38 pm i really don't care for malick (esp late career prolific malick), but i hadn't even heard of a hidden life, so i googled it, and to my surprise i was pleased to find out that there's an arthouse theatre about an hour away from me! not only that, but bellocchio's the traitor will be playing there in the near future! might have to make a little day trip out of it. so thx malick (read: oscarwerner)!

Just remembered an image from an excel file isn't going to work for tallying! Sorry, I'll do it the long way asap.
