Mostly watched relatively new stuff this year. The Berlinale didn't yield stunning results for me except for one new revelation and one retrospective screening. TIFF revealed two great films that I would have seen regardless of attending the festival. The rest were just things I stumbled upon during normal viewings.

Variety - Bette Gordon - 1983
Silent Light - Reygadas - 2007
Marquise of O - Rohmer - 1976
The Five Obstructions - Von Trier - 2003

The Color of Lies - Chabrol - 1999
Leave No Trace - Debra Granik - 2018
The Last Black Man in San Francisco - Joe Talbot - 2019
Once Upon a Time in Hollywood - Quentin Tarantino - 2019
Society - Brian Yuzna - 1989
Uncut Gems - Safdie Brothers -2019

I spent most of the year reviewing and writing about movies I'd seen before, so I didn't have much time for new exploration. Here's everything I rated 8 or 9 out of 10:

1. Parasite (Bong Joon-ho)
2. A Day Off (Lee Man-hui)
3. The House that Jack Built (Lars von Trier)
4. Machorka-Muff (Jean-Marie Straub/Danièle Huillet)
5. The Son of Joseph (Eugène Green)
6. Neither Heaven Nor Earth (Clément Cogitore)
7. The Portuguese Nun (Eugène Green)
8. Diamonds of the Night (Jan Němec)
9. Wild Geese (Shirô Toyoda)
10. Frost (Šarūnas Bartas)
11. Sleepwalk (Sara Driver)
12. Endless Desire (Shohei Imamura)

Worst movie I watched in 2019:

Blue Jasmine (Woody Allen)

trimurti (mukul s. anand)
duck, you sucker (sergio leone)

*listed in order watched. interesting looking back through my boxd diary. some films that i gave four stars, i don't feel like putting on my list, cuz it doesn't feel right now as though they had a lasting effect. then there are some films i gave three stars, and yet i feel like i have to add them here, cuz i'm still sitting here smiling as i think about them. it was a great year overall, but also a sad year. my used-to-be-local movie rental spot closed after thirty years in business. grew up going there. big part of my development into a super champ. a lot of the films listed above were my last rentals before they closed. most of the other films listed were watched cuz of scfz, so thx y'all! and for anyone who hasn't seen some of the stuff above, i really truly highly rec it! there's something there for everyone too. dt might like andhadhun. sally might like love on delivery. curtis might like l'aîné des ferchaux. lota might like i was a teenage zombie. rischka might like mary jane's not a virgin anymore. nrh might like accident. and everyone could, would, should, and better like the whole shootin' match!

Just watched it. An interesting ride, to say the least! I've seen some people compare it to Dil Se in its mash-up of genres, though Andhadhun lacks the political overtones that make Dil Se and its romance so potent. Andhadhun tackles some social themes, but they're largely overtaken by the twisty genre thrills it's going for. Still, a fun bit of pulp fiction.:cowboy: Thanks for the rec!

Looks like I have watched more films in January 2020 than the whole of last year! Notable watches in no particular order:

Irishman (Scorsese)
Uncut Gems (Safdie brothers)
La Pointe Courte (Varda)
Colossal Youth (Costa)
Tunes of Glory (Neame)

Good to see this forum still alive and kicking!

Thanks Rischka! Life’s been good actually; just different priorities. Hopefully, will have more time for films this year.

I hope you are doing fine too. Thanks for keeping the SCFZ torch burning!
