SCFZ poll: Hirokazu Kore-eda

Post by flip »

Polling the films of director Hirokazu Kore-eda

The rules:

- your list can include no more than half of the Kore-eda films you've seen, up to a maximum of 5. So if you've seen seven of his films, for example, you can list only a top 3. It's only if you've seen ten or more of his films than you can list the maximum of five.

- i'll assume ballots are ranked unless you tell me otherwise. unranked ballots are fine.

- deadline for ballots: next Friday, in seven days, whatever day that is

- if anyone is watching films for these polls, then i'll extend the deadline up to three days, if someone requests an extension

- next poll: whoever posts the first ballot in this thread is free to nominate the director we poll next, unless you've nominated in this round already (everyone should get a chance). Already nominated this round: oscarwerner, greennui, mesnalty, bure

umbugbene created an index on letterboxd of all of our previous polls here: letterboxd.com/umbugbene/list/index-of-all-scfz-director-polls/

one rule for nominees: at least 3 scfzers need to have seen 10+ of a nominee's films, or at least 4 scfzers need to have seen at least 8 of the nom's films, so if it isn't clear if that will be the case, we'll confirm that's true before moving forward

if 24 hours pass after a poll opens, and no one eligible to nominate has posted a ballot, then i'll nominate someone, and then we'll start over, and everyone will be able to nominate again

lav diaz might work, but i think we should check. hopefully enough people have spent the 60 hours it takes to watch eight diaz films :)

if anyone has seen 8+ lav diaz, please post here! we'll go with wilder as a fallback.

I've seen exactly 8 Lav Diaz films. It would be pretty disappointing if I couldn't help out there, since I live in the Philippines. He does have a few short films.

unusually close contest, with what i think is a surprise winner, though not knowing kore-eda that well, i can't be sure (i was under the impression that maborosi, after life and shoplifters were his three best-known films) :

results

1. Still Walking (2008) -- 13 pts
2. Maborosi (1995) -- 12 pts
2. After Life (1998) -- 12 pts
4. Shoplifters (2018) -- 11 pts
5. Like Father, Like Son (2013) -- 8 pts
6. Nobody Knows (2004) -- 7 pts
7. I Wish (2011) -- 6 pts
8. Umimachi Diary (Our Little Sister) (2015) -- 5 pts
9. After the Storm (2016) -- 3 pts
10. Without Memory (1996) -- 1 pt

Still Walking was in some ways a breakthrough, from fairly known director to festival darling. It's when the constant ozu comparisons started as well
