Re: SCFZ poll: Billy Wilder
My probable second choice, thoxics.

Actually my second choice is Andrzej Wajda. Sorry.

damn. and to think i was gonna make time for the story of us, alex & emma, and rumor has it...
I've got zero Im and 3 Wajda

we'd need just one other person who has seen several im kwon-taek films to do that poll. i'll wait to friday to see if anyone has, but if not, wajda will definitely work, so he'll be our fallback.
Wilder is probably my favorite director of his generation. A true master of his craft.
Seen 8:
Sunset Boulevard - my #1 film of all time
Witness for the Prosecution
Some Like It Hot
The Apartment

i've decided to start the next director poll on tuesday, instead of tomorrow, because i'll also be tallying up the scifiz poll. so if you watch at least two im kwon-taek films by then, we'll be able to do that poll.

While I'd like more people to watch Im Kwon-taek's films - he is, after all, one of the few "classics" still around - maybe Wajda'd just be easier for everyone, Flip.

I'm cool with whatever.
Also I forgot to mention earlier that a few excellent Im films aren't on the KFA playlist - dunno why. They are:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vY4wn6Kf9po
and
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xNdlh4nuOQU
and
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TfEuV43YTcI
and a very early one I haven't seen (the guy's directed films since '62!):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VY-EJTgVxoY
Unfortunately they've also taken down one of Im's best films, Fly High, Run Far. Someone else has put it up here:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2FfZ28JoIqs
But the KFA did a whole new set of subtitles to play over the very inadequate hardsubs of this copy (which fails to translate a number of dialogues), and if anyone wants to download from Youtube and needs the set of improved subs, let me know.
They also took down one called Genealogy (1979) that I haven't seen, but it's been uploaded unsubtitled here:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9z4qYpu2z7k
Subs are available for it.

(My next nominee will likely be Okamoto, but tried that 3 times already so if anybody want to catch up on him as well, please do).
Seen 13 Wajdas, will try to see a few more.

lots of votes in this, and quite a few surprises to me, which probably says more about my impressions of how wilder is regarded than about wilder, but i thought the lost weekend and the seven year itch would do a lot better, and i would have though some like it hot would vie for the top spot, but no:

and i decided to go with the im kwon-taek poll, i think for many people the polls become the impetus to watch films, so it doesn't really matter when we start it, he'll probably get the same number of views, and i'm watching his films now. we'll get to wajda soon i'm sure!

The biggest surprise for me is seeing Sabrina barely making the top 10, and being beaten out by two 70s efforts - not that I'm complaining.
I'm not surprised Some Like It Hot didn't end up winning, there are so many Wilder chasing the top spot, but I am surprised it was not even close to being in the running.
