1971 poll

Post by Lencho of the Apes »

Choose your favorite films from 1971 (according to IMDb).

– Each person votes for up to 20 movies. Do not feel compelled to fill the maximum allowable number, if you're enthusiastic about fewer than twenty.
– Do not rank the films except the number 1, it gets two points..

Users are urged to post their provisional lists as soon as possible so that others may use them for recommendations. You may, of course, revise your lists at any point prior to the deadline.

Ballots posted by new members who have not participated in other parts of the forum will not be counted.

Deadline for 1971 lists will be Monday, Dec 2nd at approximately 1 PM Pacific Time.

Recommended:
- (nostalgia) (Hollis Frampton)
- A Bay of Blood (Mario Bava)
- maybe Death Walks on High Heels (Luciano Ercoli), don't really remember this one specifically but Ercoli's gialli visuals can't be beat
- maybe Trafic (Jacques Tati), don't like its scenes featuring non-consensual filming of strangers, but otherwise one of the most interesting Tati's for me.

Only seen 23 movies from 1971 at present, but I'll try to change that this month :D

So far --

A CLOCKWORK ORANGE
KLUTE
THE DEVILS
WILLY WONKA AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY
SUNDAY BLOODY SUNDAY
WALKABOUT
CLOWNS (Fellini)

Seen a lot more, but these are the ones I'd stick my neck out for as being the best. I'll look a bit closer. Do I have room for THE ABOMINABLE DR. PHIBES? THX 1138?
These matters are best disposed of from a great height. Over water.

A year without a masterpiece that towers above all others, but with much excellence. As usual in such years where I can easily come up with 20 to start, I'll nix ones I like that'll have plenty of votes without mine (the two Aussies, McCabe and Mcbeth, New Leaf, Four Seasons, Orgasmic Mysteries) to make room for a few obscurities I'm fond of.

For now, ladies first:

You and Me (Shepitko)
Long Farewells (Muratova)
Trial on the Road (German) - ack! 1986 on IMDb!
Szindbád
If I Had a Gun (Uher) (pretty sure I watched this and voted for it for the 1972 poll - oh well, tis 71 now)
Four Nights of a Dreamer
The White Bird Marked with Black (Ilyenko)
Uncle Vanya (Konchalovsky)
Byelorussian Station (Smirnov)
A Necklace for My Beloved (Abuladze)
Love (Makk)
The Day Passed (Babayev)
The Wolves (Gosho)
The Emigrants (Troell)
The Men (Carle)
Inn of Evil (Kobayashi)
Family Life (Zanussi)
Ants' Nest (Fábri)
Sikkim (Ray)
Little Hedgehogs Have No Quills (Petrov)
The Polygamous Wazzou (Ganda)
Have a look at all the picnics of the intellect: These conceptions! These discoveries! Perspectives! Subtleties! Publications! Congresses! Discussions! Institutes! Universities! Yet: one senses nothing but stupidity. - Gombrowicz, Diary

I highly recommend The Emigrants (Troell), especially to those who like the work of Nicolas Roeg. It's quite an odd movie, really. My choice for best film of 1971. The editing sometimes creates a dreamy space where you realise you're inside Kristina's troubled mind. It's beautifully done.

"The Emigrants" is a famous set of Swedish novels by Villem Moberg that chronicles the lives of a family which itself was part of a huge wave of desperately poor Swedish settlers who came to America in the 1850s and 60s, and who ended up establishing the frontier farming communities of the mid-west, mostly in the states of Minnesota and Missouri.

i'd like to see the emigrants, but it's got a posh criterion release so feel bad about getting it from 'other sources'. not that i have a blu ray player, and not that i could watch anything other than europe region restrictions anyway, so i guess i won't watch it. if only it was fucking legally streaming somewhere, what is this magical technology?

on the other hand i've put the policeman in the thing. my 2nd fave israeli film after late marriage. of the few films from israel that i've seen

I'm not a fan of Troell (bland director of bloated films) but I do like The Emigrants, been a few years since I last saw it though. The sequel is skippable imo.
