I am completely up for hard weepy romance, and docs. Silents might be too broad?

Also, is nautical a genre? (For anyone else. Can include lighthouses)

Desert movies, jungle movies, other location based flicks maybe even snow/arctic conditions, domestic dramas/comedies, or split that into family and relationship ones maybe, submarine movies could almost be a genre to themselves, but at least need mention with the nautical, business movies, government movies, both royalty and civilian, and of course movies about trains and/or planes.

actually i like this specificity. sometimes i just want to watch such a thing, and such narrow polls will be lovely to mine. whether greg was taking the piss or not.

and ooooooh the snow ones. perennially.

No piss taking, or making, at all. I think the specificity is really interesting. I mean there are all sorts of conventions around narrower genres like snow, jungle, and desert movies, or submarine or train flicks that signal their own genre qualities as they get reused and changed over time. I think that stuff gets overlooked too often by slotting everything in the broadest possible genre categories. I mean you can break things down in more than one way to get equally interesting answers, like noting when spaceship movies are more like submarine/sea going ship movies than, say, westerns as just one example.

Oh, and epics! I love me some epics. Biopics are good too, but more fun when broken down by what type of figure is getting the movie treatment, artist, musician, scientist, or so on as they all tend towards separate "rules" as well.

If you really want to play with the concepts, you can also break down the movies by their plot types, like "fish out of water" stories and the like, or be cynical and do things like white savior movies and so on.

I love it. All of it.

And I'd be all over a heist poll, and children's movies, as I already watch abnormal amounts of those.

And cheese of course. brb to go eat some cheese

Oh, and backstage/behind the scenes movies are kinda fun, and, evidently, I'm a fan of what I guess you'd call strangers in a strange land films, like Renoir's The River, I Walked with a Zombie, or Stroszek. Although that is also where many of the white savior films live too as well as some that sort of straddle the line with surrogacy instead of savior.

so many great suggestions.

I love those narrow(er) type of films, as I tend to be really into some of those.
You can always break down things even more, like instead of sports movies, you just go with baseball movies.

Another category that hasn't yet been suggested, and that I usually enjoiy (and have tons of favorites) would be Coming-of-age movies

And we could also do animation polls by sub-categories, like an "adult animation" poll or such, where only films that one wouldn't show or recommend for kids would be featured (like "Grave of the Fireflies" or "Akira" or "Perfect Blue" or some stuff by Bill Plympton or all those adult European animations, etc.).

Anthology films (aka omnibus films) - movies broken into multiple separate stories, often by different directors

All of these are great ideas! The ones I could make the most substantial contributions to are Action!, Coming-of-age, Animation, and Anthology films, but I agree with WBA that animation could be usefully divided into multiple polls of different sub-categories.

I'm not sure which polls have and haven't been done, but one suggestion I have is non-American/Spaghetti Westerns so that Osterns, 'noodle' Westerns, 'ramen' Westerns, and others can be highlighted as they deserve!

Anthology films would be cool - though since they tend to be wildly variable in quality, it might be better to have people vote for individual segments of anthology films without having to endorse the whole thing.
