SCFZ poll: Emilio Fernandez
SCFZ poll: Emilio Fernandez
Polling the films of director Emilio Fernandez
The rules:
- your list can include no more than half of the Fernandez films you've seen, up to a maximum of 5. So if you've seen seven of his films, for example, you can list only a top 3. It's only if you've seen ten or more of his films than you can list the maximum of five.
- i'll assume ballots are ranked unless you tell me otherwise. unranked ballots are fine.
- deadline for ballots: next Tuesday, in seven days, whatever day that is
- if anyone is watching films for these polls, then i'll extend the deadline up to three days, if someone requests an extension
- next poll: whoever posts the first ballot in this thread is free to nominate the director we poll next, unless you've nominated in this round already (everyone should get a chance). Already nominated this round: wba, greg x, ofrene, greennui, evelyn, bure, mesnalty, umbugbene, roscoe, st gloede, brian d, kanafani, silga, oscarwerner, dt., nrh, arkheia, grabmymask, thoxans, john ryan, liquidnature, caracortada, rischka, zulawski, twodeadmagpies, augusto, jww342
umbugbene created an index on letterboxd of all of our previous polls here: letterboxd.com/umbugbene/list/index-of-all-scfz-director-polls/
one rule for nominees: at least 3 scfzers need to have seen 10+ of a nominee's films, or at least 4 scfzers need to have seen at least 8 of the nom's films, so if it isn't clear if that will be the case, we'll confirm that's true before moving forward
if 24 hours pass after a poll opens, and no one eligible to nominate has posted a ballot, then i'll nominate someone, and then we'll start over, and everyone will be able to nominate again

Enamorada
I've only seen five Fernández films so far, though I might try to see a sixth before the deadline so I can add for Salon Mexico or whatever else I see to the list. I just wish Ninón Sevilla was in another of his films.

I started exploring Fernandez with La Perla, which I instantly loved, and made me eager to explore more. I have now seen 5 and unfortunately none of them held up. La Perla has a magical realist atmosphere and manages to pass the greater than life check, the rest, while good, feel overly melodramatic, and just a bit simple. Will still watch more, but for now I will just vote for:
La Perla
La Perla
just because we might not get many longer ballots this time, i'd encourage everyone to vote for as many films as allowed, just to make for a better poll. that is, if people like enough films well enough to vote for them. i've only seen one (which was excellent) but will try to watch another soon.

The opposite of 'reify' is... ?
I've only seen one, which was great.

lencho, would you like to nominate our next director? if yes, great, and if no, then no one else eligible to nominate has posted a ballot, so i'll pick the next director and we'll start again from a clean slate

Seen 5 :
I vote for:
1. The Pearl (1947)
2. María Candelaria (1944)
I saw his films long ago in my country and long time had no idea the director is the same person, who played ugly mexican in The Wild Bunch (1969), Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia (1974).....

Emilio Fernandez reminded me Sam Peckinpah movies. And i see we haven`t rated this interesting director. Maybe time came for him?crypt trotsky wrote: ↑Thu Oct 17, 2019 4:49 pm lencho, would you like to nominate our next director? if yes, great, and if no, then no one else eligible to nominate has posted a ballot, so i'll pick the next director and we'll start again from a clean slate
peckinpah is a great idea for a poll -- you'll have a chance to nominate him soon if you want!

interestingly (to me at least), the #1 film in this poll has a total of 86 ratings on imdb, and only 60 views on letterboxd. that must be an obscurity record for these director polls, and one that might never be beaten.
