SCFZ poll: King Hu
SCFZ poll: King Hu
Polling the films of director King Hu
The rules:
- your list can include no more than half of the King Hu films you've seen, up to a maximum of 5. So if you've seen seven of his films, for example, you can list only a top 3. It's only if you've seen ten or more of his films than you can list the maximum of five.
- i'll assume ballots are ranked unless you tell me otherwise. unranked ballots are fine.
- deadline for ballots: next Wednesday, in seven days, whatever day that is
- if anyone is watching films for these polls, then i'll extend the deadline up to three days, if someone requests an extension
- next poll: whoever posts the first ballot in this thread is free to nominate the director we poll next, unless you've nominated in this round already (everyone should get a chance). Already nominated this round: wba, greg x, ofrene, greennui, evelyn, bure, mesnalty, umbugbene, roscoe, st gloede, brian d, kanafani, silga, oscarwerner, dt., nrh, arkheia, grabmymask, thoxans, john ryan, liquidnature, caracortada, rischka
umbugbene created an index on letterboxd of all of our previous polls here: letterboxd.com/umbugbene/list/index-of-all-scfz-director-polls/
one rule for nominees: at least 3 scfzers need to have seen 10+ of a nominee's films, or at least 4 scfzers need to have seen at least 8 of the nom's films, so if it isn't clear if that will be the case, we'll confirm that's true before moving forward
if 24 hours pass after a poll opens, and no one eligible to nominate has posted a ballot, then i'll nominate someone, and then we'll start over, and everyone will be able to nominate again

i'm making a one-time exception to my viewing thresholds for a poll, for a couple of reasons - king hu was one view away from meeting the mark anyway, and i want to get the polls started up again, and it would take a while to get another name to poll. hopefully some people are inspired to watch a few of his films - i haven't seen any, so i'll try to watch some this week!

"Most esteemed biographer of Peter Barrington Hutton"
I'll come up with a director later today during a coffee break.
Ok, I'm drinking my coffee now. How about Hanoun or Angelopoulos?
I have 0 Hanoun, 10 Angelopoulos.
"I too am a child burned by future experiences, fallen back on myself and already suspecting the certainty that in the end only those will prove benevolent who believe in nothing." – Marran Gosov
7 hanoun (but i’d watch more for the poll), 13 angelopoulos
"Most esteemed biographer of Peter Barrington Hutton"
hanoun would be a really interesting choice, though i'd be surprised if he has enough views for a poll. it sounds like angelopoulos will work, so i'll start that poll now in order to keep the polls going, and we can check hanoun in the next round of nominations.
so it seems everyone agrees about which are king hu's best films - the voting overlapped so much that there's only the votes to make a top seven. so to get to the usual top ten, i need votes for three more films -- if anyone has seen king hu films that didn't make the top 7 below, if you could post a second ballot ranking those films, that would be very helpful!

The ones I've seen not mentioned
Valiant Ones
Swordsman (A movie started by Hu, but with several other directors finishing it. Not really that bad for all that though.)

i'd rate
sons of the good earth
the valiant ones
all the king's men
valiant ones really suffers from being in probably the worst quality of any available king hu. and all the king's men from not, i think, being available digitally at all.
swordsman and sue san are great but feels odd to vote for them given the questions over who directed.

thanks for the additional ballots! those get us to eleven films, for the extra votes i used the normal scoring system divided by ten if anyone cares.
