SCFZ poll: Kiyoshi Kurosawa

Post by flip »

Polling the films of director Kiyoshi Kurosawa

The rules:

- your list can include no more than half of the Kiyoshi Kurosawa films you've seen, up to a maximum of 5. So if you've seen seven of his films, for example, you can list only a top 3. It's only if you've seen ten or more of his films than you can list the maximum of five.

- i'll assume ballots are ranked unless you tell me otherwise. unranked ballots are fine.

- deadline for ballots: next Tuesday, in seven days, whatever day that is

- if anyone is watching films for these polls, then i'll extend the deadline up to three days, if someone requests an extension

- next poll: whoever posts the first ballot in this thread is free to nominate the director we poll next, unless you've nominated in this round already (everyone should get a chance). Already nominated this round: wba, greg x, ofrene, greennui, evelyn, bure, mesnalty, umbugbene, roscoe, st gloede, brian d, kanafani, silga, oscarwerner, dt., nrh, arkheia, grabmymask, thoxans

umbugbene created an index on letterboxd of all of our previous polls here: letterboxd.com/umbugbene/list/index-of-all-scfz-director-polls/

one rule for nominees: at least 3 scfzers need to have seen 10+ of a nominee's films, or at least 4 scfzers need to have seen at least 8 of the nom's films, so if it isn't clear if that will be the case, we'll confirm that's true before moving forward

if 24 hours pass after a poll opens, and no one eligible to nominate has posted a ballot, then i'll nominate someone, and then we'll start over, and everyone will be able to nominate again

I’ve now seen 4 movies from Kiyoshi Kurosawa, and I have not been impressed by any of them. The adulation this guy gets baffles me.

I've only seen 8 of his movies to my surprise since I'd thought I seen a couple more and like his work a lot, but on checking a lot of it hasn't been available like his work in the early 2000s was. Obviously the movies are out there for download or maybe streaming somewhere just not in the same commercial pipeline here that they once were. I'm especially surprised to see how many I've missed from the last few years as I'd only heard mention of a few of them.

Kinda surprised to discover I've seen zero by him. Somewhat familiar with his reputation. I don't expect to see anything by him in the next few years but I imagine I'll get to his work eventually

I've not given up on him yet! I'll watch these three at some point: Cure - Before we Vanish - Journey to the Shore. If those don't work out, then I'm officially done with Kiyoshi.

seen 17, one of the most interesting working directors.

the seventh code
before we vanish
eye of the spider*

*really should count as a vote for its sister film serpent's path as well i guess, but rules etc.

would love to see some of the newer films i've missed (journey to the shore, the french project, foreboding, the new film which i'll catch at nyff next month) and especially the early v cinema films, shoot yourself or suit yourself series most of all.

Only seen two. "Good enough", but not great. Somewhat interested in Tokyo Sonata, but pretty far down my watchlist.
