Doubling the Canon 2019 Update - Results

Welcome to our annual update.

What is this?
Begun in 2007, Doubling the Canon is a yearly project which aims to expand the Film Canon as crafted by the They Shoot Pictures, Don't They? website. Originally it was a selection of 1000 movies to complement the TSPDT Top 1000, now it is a list of 1000-1250 which complements both the all time Top 1000 and the companion TSPDT Top 1000 of the 21st century.

Who can participate?
Anyone can join. Requirement for newbies: Please note that you will be requested to identify yourself, just to make sure that the poll is answered (only once) by cinephiles of good will.

What is new in this update?
Any film that is newly admitted to the Doubled Canon must be subjected to a revote after 5 years so we're going to revote the 2014 entries.

Phase I: Nominations for titles not on either the TSPDT lists or the Doubling list.
Deadline: March 18
Each participant can nominate a maximum of 12 films. Shorts, TV-movies, and TV mini-series are eligible. Every nominated movie goes onto the roster as a nominee. Films released in 2018-19 aren't allowed this year for our exercise.

Please, don't edit your post! To change your ballot (undesirable) or add new titles you have to write a new reply.

Phase II: Ratings.
You're invited to rate the films you have seen (whether you have participated in the phase I or not). The nominees with the highest ratings make it into our list.
You can cast your votes anytime between now and Thursday, April 25. Only 'write-in' updates will be accepted after the deadline.
Please, sign your ballot. Example: This is Angel Glez from Spain. The country is optional, but it would be interesting to have a country breakdown of the doublers.

Rating system:
6=All time top 600
5=All time top 601-1,200
4=All time top 1,201-1,800
3=All time top 1,801-2,400
2=It's a good movie, but not special enough to deserve placement in a 2,400-movie canon
1=It's an average movie, far from good enough to deserve placement on this list
0=I dislike this movie
Note: The cutoff was 3.91 last year. That means a 3 does not really help a film make the list.

Already voted on the ICM Forum, but for those interested:

For once I decided to play it relatively smart, avoiding to re-champion films ad-nauseam that just never got close to the finish line, such as Motforestilling, Panic in Needle Park, I Am an Elephant Madam or From Morn to Midnight - though, I have to admit, my long crusade to get Aa Bakudan (3.85 last time) will continue - how could it not?!

I also looks back over previous results. Devastating to see the Robbe-Grillet masterpieces Eden and After and La Belle Captive fail miserably, the same goes for the fantastic Karl May - but I'll get over it. Going even further I made sure I didn't nominate any films that would be dead on arrival. I would love to push Mirages de Paris or Der Hauptmann von Köpenick, but when you don't even have 8 checks, chances are you won't get 8 votes.

With improved research and less optimism I am hoping my nominations actually stand a proper chance this time around.

I am however re-championing some films that got dangerously close, such as Jane B. par Agnes V. and Die Parallelstrasse, which lost out by 0.2 and 0.7 respectively last time around, and The Toth Family, which scored a 4.00, but missed 2 votes.

A holdover is automatically nominated so you have a free slot. Regarding Three Godless Years, well, most iCM users are allergic to melodramatic excesses (even the melodrama mention) and a Filipino Sjöström is too much for them. Besides I made the mistake of trying to promote the movie... just to get a high number of downgraders. Better try another one.

ICM user here. The film Tatlong taong walang Diyos is pretty great. It was chosen for the first season of the ICM world cup and was slaughtered unfortunately.

I was looking over my nominations from previous years, and I'm trying to understand what happened with one of my films. In 2015, quoting from the results thread Angel posted (post #182 here: https://www.tapatalk.com/groups/the_aut ... -s180.html ) :

-The cutoff is set to 3.89
...
The Wonderful Country [1959] 4.14-7"

It seems The Wonderful Country qualified for the list, and I thought films stayed on the list for five years? But it's not in the ICM list Angel links to above, so I might be misunderstanding how things work, or it might have been left off inadvertently.

Partly wondering so I know if I should nominate it again!
