Re: SCFZ poll: Barbara Stanwyck
Watched Night Nurse which is fun and certainly has Stanwyck firing already early on in her film career but becomes bogged down in a boring plot in the second half. Don't think it'll make my list. Gonna keep this open a while longer.

Re: Genre/Country/Region Poll Wishlist
Bond movies were my entry point into the world of cinema (From Russia With Love -> North By Northwest -> Other Hitchcock -> Kurosawa / Leone if I recall correctly) so I'd be happy to run that poll when the new one is released, haven't revisited most of them in years so could be fun to do a mini-mara...

Re: SCFZ poll: Krzysztof Kieslowski
Surprised by Antonioni, I feel like his aesthetic and sensibility is very much in line with this forum's. the thread for the antonioni poll from a few years back was not...enthusiastic about his work, although like the wkw poll i think that was largely because the people who didn't like the work we...

Re: SCFZ poll: Krzysztof Kieslowski
Kurosawa was #2 on the poll Curtis ran recently, Tarkovsky was top 20, Kubrick top 26. Surprised by Antonioni, I feel like his aesthetic and sensibility is very much in line with this forum's. L'avventura did come 13th on the top 200 you guys did in 2019 but I guess he doesn't have a deep backlog fo...

Re: SCFZ poll: Barbara Stanwyck
Been slacking off on this but did watch There's Always Tomorrow yesterday which made me cry. Gonna keep this open for a while longer for purely selfish reasons but would be great to see some more ballots, seems like both greg and kanafani have been MIA for some time, and I would've expected Lencho a...

Re: SCFZ poll: Wong Kar-Wai
Wait did I mix up the two songs? They're both sick. Even though this is off-topic, it isn't really - I think Wong's use of pop music is nearly unparalleled, at least in the films that I've watched. Apart from the obvious Scorseses and Tarantinos, who are the directors who can lay claim to rivalling ...

Re: SCFZ poll: Wong Kar-Wai
I watched Streets of Fire pretty damn stoned when we had the Hill poll a while back and as that sequence was playing I was honestly considering where the film would fall on my top 10 list. Hard to live up to that tho.

Re: SCFZ poll: Wong Kar-Wai
I like both Mean Streets and Streets of Fire a lot, and I enjoyed this one, but I mostly found the triads stuff comically exaggerated and not at all hard-hitting, which is why I prefer Wong's sidelining/abstraction of genre elements in his later work. Anyway, flip's list has alerted me to a couple o...

Huh, I've been pronouncing it (in my head, mostly) with a ch (like in change, I don't know orthography, sadly) sound all this time. So would that have been Czytilova?

Lol, I was sure it was something I hadn't seen, but to be fair it's been ages, definitely time for a re-watch. I'll put something up and get the ball rolling again this weekend.

Re: SCFZ poll: Wong Kar-Wai
Watched As Tears Go By , which was a fun little take on Mean Streets of Fire but wba's assertion that it's Wong's best film by far is a bit baffling as it's clearly a blueprint for his collaborations with Doyle which squeeze vastly more out of the same milieu of Hong Kong, neon, and romantic longing...

Re: SCFZ poll: Vera Chytilova
Sadly, Fruit of Paradise was the opposite of brilliant, though it did amuse me to think of what Holyman would make of it. The first ten minutes are daring, eye-grabbing stuff, but the hour and a half that follow consist of nearly unwatchable am-dram, annoying sound design, and empty symbolism. Prett...

thought i'd make a start on 2015 with a nice gentle comedy in case all the silent stuff had made all the modern arty-farty fare unpalatable, so i watched a man called ove. this was a mistake. holy shit the music. here is the sad bit, here is the overcoming bit, here is joyous reconciliation. here a...
