DMX is lucky he even made it to 50. In hood and drug years, that is probably closer to 100.
He was a definite breath of fresh ferocious air in the shiny suit era. He did his thing and left a mark. R.I.P.

Re: Last Watched
Clark had a good run until Rhinestone. That film ruined him. Terrible film, and he never recovered from it. Black Christmas is one of the greatest horrors of all time. Deathdream is an unusual little film about the traumas of war disguised as a horror film. It's basically a family drama with horror ...

Re: SCFZ poll: Wong Kar-Wai
When talking about greatness, it is necessarily limiting. When talking about creativity in general, it is much less of a concern. Certainly, everyone has different standards and views on what qualifies a piece of art as great, but, what you are doing here is not just setting up thresholds of greatn...

Re: SCFZ poll: Wong Kar-Wai
This is a good debate but to be honest, I think a lot of you have a different thing in mind when you’re using these terms so I don’t think you’re even disagreeing as much as you think you are. Yes. We aren't really talking past each other, we just seem to have different ideas about concepts, or per...

even in the mood for love - with tony and maggie refusing to sleep with each other as a kind of one-upmanship to their cheating spouses, choosing instead to live in a kind of limbo of desire that in a weird way matches this fake shanghai that never was that wong has built - is fundamentally pervers...

Re: SCFZ poll: Wong Kar-Wai
I can, to an extent, see where you are coming from. While form and style can be too sides of the same coin - and in many ways, I would say Straub-Huillet worked on style and could be classified as stylists - the general understanding is that form is more intellectual - while style is not. See Othon...

FLIP: Before we get to definitions and whether artists are consciously saying things or not, which is not entirely the point but some of it, what is symbolism? Is it inert? To me a formalist in film is distinguished more by rigor and stylistic choices that cannot be separated from the material. WkW ...

Re: SCFZ poll: Wong Kar-Wai
I find the discussion above a little odd. I'm not sure if this is a controversial take or not, but as far as I'm concerned style is substance, substance is style. Any additional substance not in service of style (cinematic expression) is cinematically irrelevant - at best getting a bit of sympathy ...

Movies like Vertigo, Charulata, and Last Year at Marienbad also depict romantic longing brilliantly, but each of them shows an unhealthy si...

Hollywood or Bust: I much prefer Lewis on his own, and probably Martin too. Lewis was more restrained in their films and Martin was often a wet blanket. I get that that was their 'thing', but it was very limiting, especially for Lewis. Don't understand why this is referred to as a 'Hollywood satire'...

Finally watched all Yang's films with A Confucian Confusion the last and found it really forgettable and disappointing, which is much the same experience I had with Mahjong. It just struck me as a try too hard comedy. Not really sure what he was up to with those two when the rest of his filmography...

I tracked down a film I’ve been interested in for a while, Sürkület (English translation: Twilight), by the Hungarian director Gyorgy Feher. he doesn't seem to be a cinephile in the classic sense at all He is a video clip director who got lucky basically. Have you seen his greatest movies list? It is about as narrow as it gets for a director of his generation. The ambiguity you are referring to is probably the result of Fincher being ra...

The Godfather Coda: the new intro changes the focus of the story, and a few cuts here and there have improved the pacing. The photography looks better than ever. Willis' contrasty interiors and day shots look incredible and would have to rank up there with the best of cinema at that time. The use of...

^^Agree with all that. It wasn't good, but it was more interesting than Spike's last 4 or 5 films. He really messed up the battle scenes though which is odd considering that they were quite well done in Miracle of St.Anna.

And The Ship Sails On: Fellini's most misunderstood film. It's very difficult for people to understand (especially Anglophones) that it is both lampooning and lamenting the demise of old European bourgeois culture, of which opera is merely a symbol.
