Re: Last Watched
Beauty and The Beast (1978): This is a criminally underseen film. I'd go as far to say that it's superior to Cocteau's version. Herz was great at creating these fantasy worlds that were gritty and dark. This is a gothic fairy tale that delves more deeply into the monster's self loathing and torment ...

Re: Last Watched
^^We always care, but the two greatest things to come from Denmark = Dreyer and King Diamond :D The Other Side of The Wind: It is a fascinating mess, just like I expected. Was very surprised at the nudity and eroticism, especially given Welles' generally negative opinion of that stuff, but I guess t...

Re: Last Watched
^^Thanks. I'll have to watch it. UNBREAKABLE: Rewatch. Not sure why I bothered. M.Night is to blame for overly serious modern genre films that are nowhere near as intelligent and thoughtful as their creators think rather than Nolan. His cinema, or at least his early work, is the place where solemnit...

Re: Last Watched
I'd take it over The Player any day! Short Cuts too. Not so sure the consensus is so much wrong about Quintet as it is way off on its estimations of Short Cuts and The Player. Double ugh, or should I say double smugh. They are definitely overrated films. I've never understood why they are compared ...

Re: Last Watched
^^Kubrickian detachment perhaps, but not his compositional skill or his edge really, although Lanthimos certainly fancies himself 'edgy'. QUINTET: I was expecting a bit of a dud and was pleasantly surprised. I liked the Vaseline smeared edges, almost Sokurovian before Sokurov, and the atmosphere of ...

Re: Last Watched
THE FAVORITE -- Yorgos Lanthimos' picture of intrigues among the ladies at the court of Queen Anne. Rachel Weisz, Olivia Colman and Emma Stone all do very good work here, but it's an uphill battle against the familiarity of the story. It isn't exactly hard to see where this is going to end up. Good...

Re: 1994 poll
^He is, but Ed Wood is a grand letter to cinema and the dreamers that operate within it. I think there are degrees of being overrated. Burton is not taken that seriously as an artist whereas Yang is, despite the fact that, like Tsai, he is just making cliched alienation art films that seem more exot...

Re: 1994 poll
That Yang one is a pretty ordinary attempt at a 'comedy'. Very overrated film maker. Why are people voting for On Deadly Ground? That is about as close to an objectively bad film as you can get from 94, unless you are a huge fan of Seagal. It's terribly made. 1.Ed Wood (Burton) Satantango (Tarr) Cru...

Re: SCFZ poll: Robert Bresson
Seen 13 1.Balthazar 2.A Man Escaped 3.L'argent 4.Pickpocket 5.Diary of a Country Priest I find it interesting how popular Lancelot is here. I like that film a lot, but to me it isn't top shelf Bresson, although it has greatness in it, and I'd probably rank it 6th. His films tend to grow on me though...

Halloween (2018): People honestly thought this rhythmless crap was well made? Yeh there are some long shots, but none of them are good. David Gordon Green always struck me as being a bit of a poser, but his films are often well edited and have some atmospheric content. This has nothing. Jamie Lee C...

more American dumbing down of foreign arthouse cinema i.e. every sofia coppola movie ever (harumph i feel grumpsters this morning) Aye, but this is far more blatant than anything I've seen from Coppola. Their similar though in the sense that you produce the milquetoast effect. Bland films where cow...

Wan or the CGI technicians? It is difficult to tell who did what in those behemoth productions. Select scenes I saw recently looked godawful though. A Ghost Story: more American dumbing down of foreign arthouse cinema. There is a reason that Bela Tarr or Tsai never made a film about a guy walking ar...

Re: The Films of 2018
i know i've said this before but the "bad year for films" thing always seems weird to me; usually i find it means "i'm looking in the wrong places" or "the curators i trust or the platforms available to me have failed me," not "there aren't good to great films out...

Re: The Films of 2018
I really liked Mandy, but that film is essentially a man child's wet dream.
Perhaps I haven't seen enough films this year, but none of the 'serious' ones have stood out to me.

BlacKkKlansman: This probably won't surprise anyone, but I thought this was kind of a bullshit film for a number of reasons. Firstly, it has zero energy. Secondly, it is visually uninteresting. It looks like a polished TV film for the most part and aside from some interesting crosscutting and a 'flo...
