Re: Vilnius International Film Festival 2019

nrh Three days into the festival and so far I've missed on Denis films, but I'll try to see at least one. I've watched Ash Is Purest White and liked it a good deal. It's my 3rd Jia Zhangke film and it is pretty close to how much I loved A Touch of Sin. I still need to see his earlier films. As for ...

I think these polls should run for four weeks. Also, we are running short on years that are still left to do, so going with four weeks would extend the current run of year polls.

I agree with Matias. I too schedule most of my film watching according to the Year Polls. I watched 14 films from 1989 and at least 4 or 5 of them will end up on my final list.

Re: Vilnius International Film Festival 2019

. I wish I could see the Claire Denis on the big screen. Beau travail , of course, but those other two of hers I saw that are set in Africa, White Material and Chocolat , were vivid and very atmospheric, too. I recommend them if you haven't seen them. . The only one Denis film I’ve seen is Bastards...

Re: Vilnius International Film Festival 2019

Thanks, Pabs. I marked Beautiful Boy because I loved Felix van Groeningen's previous film Belgica . But thematically I don't have much interest in Beautiful Boy. As for Burning, it is one of my most anticipated films. I keep hearing about a dance scene over and over again. Got to see what it's all a...

Re: 1989 poll

it's not a bad film as is but it was recut by the studio without ferrara's involvement. ferrara has a single copy of his own cut that he's shown a few times here and there but as far as i know not available anywhere outside of his garage. It's by no means a bad film. I rated it 5/10. However that c...

Re: 1989 poll

Other highlights of watching for 1989 poll:

Music Box (Costa-Gavras)
Harlem Nights (Eddie Murphy)
Jacknife (David Hugh Jones)
Johnny Handsome (Walter Hill)

and was kind of disappointed by Ferrara's Cat Chaser. Expected more from his pairing with Elmore Leonard.

For All Mankind is the Movie of the Week on the Criterion Channel this week. Probably won't be on my list, but it is pretty good, and it's got some stunning footage. I've watched For All Mankind for this poll and it will most likely end up on my final list. May not be a brilliant doc, but neverthel...

Life Lessons is a reason I included New York Stories. I didn't know if I can include it separately from the others. So I await the decision as well. And would change my ballot accordingly.

I for one cannot stand 3D. I find it to be an absolutely useless gimmick that doesn't improve my enjoyment of the film. On the contrary, I find 3D an unnecessary tool, because viewer already sees the scope and depth in traditional film. When you look at a 2D movie, it’s already in 3D as far as your ...
