Re: SCFZ poll: Nicolas Roeg

Hugely mixed feelings, has made some great films but much of his critically lauded stuff is trite. So I'll vote for these two....

1. Bad Timing
2. The Witches

The issue then being, St. Gloede, that you're viewing Bollywood cinema through cultural assumptions about the 'cinematic language' that are founded outside of the home of Bollywood, no?

I think there are a few of us who sympathize with Vulgar Auteuristic ideas [though I disagree with the term itself] in a sense that is overall well at odds with the rest of the community!

hi all, sorry i've been so absent lately. this virus is of course affecting us all and there is drastic change in my life. i might be away for a long while. these results disappoint though don't surprise me, would have liked to see things skew further away from his actual dogme work

VERY curious to see how this poll pans out given scfz feelings toward lars. seen 29, he used to be a favorite. now i don't care all that much for him, but i still think he's very very good at what he does.

Flip, I use your star ratings to browse sometimes! It's this reason that I still use 0.5 stars and 5 star ratings but have dispensed with everything in between. I just 'know' when something is that good or that bad, but anything in-between can be really vague and difficult to gauge.

Ljubav -- what a wonderful first half, with that glorious sexual imagery of communion, too! I felt the second half got a little bogged down, away from the conceptual enterprise toward the material and easily described. Could see a Puma -- Begins and operates in many quasi-realist modes (think Atlant...

I'd say <45mins qualifies as a short, but I'm planning to keep mine to under 30mins anyway.

I'll manage Joseph Bernard.

Re: Television

I think in many ways 'The Outsider' plays like post-Twin Peaks: The Return television in its use of silence and manner. Stephen King's work has a lot more 'noise' in it and these days especially - since 'Lisey's Story,' at least - his work is kind of ruthlessly speedy with very little fat and flab a...

I saw the first episode. I'm not interested in continuing it, mostly because of how busy my personal life is over the coming months. I might catch up further down the line. Sorting by popularity is really interesting. I had no idea the new Tarantino was such an apparent smash-hit, or that Scorsese still maintains non-niche credibility. I am SHOCKED that we managed to find 7 films less 'popular' than Vaillancourt's Ruins Rider, and kind of want to see Fatso! for the sim...

honestly nrh at a guess i'd say you wouldn't be the biggest fan of the turin horse anyway, but it's worth a look simply b/c it'll be the legacy statement for hungarian cinema for years to come, the way that the seventh seal is still the gold standard for scandinavia

Re: Best of the 2010s Poll -- Results!

This is an astonishing list. I think it really captures the scope of the community. Many of us, I think, don't 'associate' with 'movements,' but for ease of communication, I think there's a really broad subsection of classicists, vulgar auteurists, regular auteurists and those interested in extremel...
