Re: sumptuous Technicolor splendor

The Mad Fox (Tomu Uchida, 1962) - Definitely had the feel of an eccentric late career entry in an old pro's ouevre. Meticulous, sprawling kabuki feast.

Taken from a letterboxd review:

Yeah, he def does in the aristocratic getup. He's got a more boyish look to him in the majority of the film.

Hanna Amon (Veit Harlan, 1951) - A wonderfully bizarre melodrama. I'm hoping it'll get the Opfergang treatment as well eventually. https://i.imgur.com/7tCocZl.png https://i.imgur.com/jI8qmuV.png Ilse Steppat was amazingly over the top as the fiery haired temptress. https://i.imgur.com/gkFYlMb.png Oh...

Re: sumptuous Technicolor splendor

Great suggestions.

I think I'm gonna start with Borzage's I've Always Loved You (1946) and Harlan's Hanna Amon (1951).

I probably would have preservered if I had found it visually appealing but I didn't (modern use of B&W rarely does it for me).

WKW used to be my fav director but my taste has changed so much in recent years that I wonder if I would like his films as much If I watched them today. A friend asked me about his films the other day and I couldn't recommend them with the same conviction as I've done before.

Re: 2014 poll

Kinda liked Vecchiali's White Nights on the Pier, a little too academic for my taste perhaps.

I made it one hour into From What Is Before before I gave up. Diaz just does nothing for me and I couldn't face the prospect of four more hours of it.

sumptuous Technicolor splendor

Recent watches like Opfergang has got me in the mood for some lurid Technicolor. What are some of SCFZ's fav ones? The more striking and/or weird the better, I'm thinking basically any color process from the 30's to the 50's would qualify, your Agfacolor's and whatnot. Examples: Leave Her to Heaven ...

Need Sally back to vote for Dwoskin and others. I think I'm pretty much done with my nominee viewings unless something comes up. The highlights: Mourning Rock (Filippos Koutsaftis, 2000) Baxter, Vera Baxter (Marguerite Duras, 1977) Nainsukh (Amit Dutta, 2010) Hollywood (Kevin Brownlow, 1980) Singing...

Wait Till the Sun Shines, Nellie (Henry King, 1952) - A sprawling obscure gem that kept going into surprising directions. The film's got a conservative appearance yet ended up as a deconstruction of this typical conservative, toxic man, making sure to show consequences of his controlling behaviour ...

Hollywood (1980) - Great and thorough documentary series on early Hollwood, narrated by James Mason, featuring lots of interviews from people who were around at the time like Lilian Gish, Gloria Swanson, Allan Dwan, King Vidor, Adela Rogers St. Johns and so forth...It's never been properly released...

This is probably fav xKhitruk of the bunch. Generally, I've found his animation style a little too reminiscent of the Eastern European cartoons I watched as kid when nothing else was on.

Singing Behind Screens (Ermanno Olmi, 2003) - "A story within a story film about a Chinese female pirate" and "Ermanno Olmi" is two things I didn't expect to hear in the same sentence, but I'm glad I've had now. :pirates: https://i.imgur.com/w50Sbsb.png https://i.imgur.com/rM2V9...

Opfergang (Veit Harlan, 1944) - Like a Powell/Pressburger technicolor melodrama shrouded in a dreamy haze of death obsession. The score was properly weird, exuberant yet funereal, in a review someone described it as 'trying to pull you over to the other side", which is indeed an apt descriptio...
