Re: what are you reading?

I would have handled it by asking you a harder question a few days later, something you'll struggle with and fail to answer, put you in your place in front of your buddies ;)

Re: indian popular cinema

I watched two mani Ratnam movies in the past two weeks: iruvar and nayakan. This brings my ratnam tally to 4- I’ve previously seen dil se and Bombay ages ago, and naturally remember nothing, expect that I loved dil se, and probably bailed out on Bombay early on. Iruvar is wonderful. Very nice song n...

Re: Year polls 2.0: a planning thread

Cool, good to know there is some interest in "non-year deep dives". I'll start a "brainstorming" thread on this idea soon. Meanwhile, let the year poll lovefest continue here!

Re: Year polls 2.0: a planning thread

but maybe you're thinking of polls where everyone makes a concerted effort to watch a lot of a director's films first, rather than the quick and informal things we've been doing. Yes, something like that. Go deep on an "unknown" director, or a country, or genre. Spend time on it, so the g...

Re: Year polls 2.0: a planning thread

I guess no one else thinks we should try something else (like in-depth country/region/genre polls, or focusing on a director, or whatever). I bow down to majority rule. I guess I’ll sit the new iteration out. I see no point in re-posting pretty much the same lists. My 2 cents on scoring and points: ...

I watched a few last weekend. A Day in the Hayfields (Cecil M. Hepworth, 1904) Panorama du port d'Alger ( 1904) Court Ladies Bathing ( 1904) Barcelona Park at Twilight (Segundo de Chomón, 1904) Metamorphosis of a Butterfly (Gaston Velle, 1904) Panorama View, Street Car Motor Room ( 1904) Blackpool V...

Re: Fútbol

did mahomes throw for like 9 yards in the first quarter or something like that? hard to believe tampa just stifled the kc offense, though their o-line was playing backups to backups in some spots (and one of their usual starting guards, laurent duvernay-tardif, is a bit of a local hero around here,...

SPORTS! Not an exciting game, but an incredible Brady win. The guy’s 43, had played his entire career with the same team, goes to Tampa, no pre-season, and he beats Brees, Rodgers, and Mahomes in the playoffs, plays in his 10th super bowl, and wins his 7th? WHAT? Gronk comes out of retirement and ge...

The prince purple rain number, with actual rain falling, must be the highlight of all halftime shows ever. Michael Jackson had a good one many years ago too.

It’s just one guy, and he’s called the weeknd? With a missing ‘e’, so you guys are not misspelling it? And he’s been big for 10 years? I feel old. I guess arthritis is next for me.

 the weeknd is very famous, but i wouldn't be shocked if people didn't know him... but miley cyrus? no?
I know Billy Ray’s daughter. Was she on? Did I miss her?

No idea who the weekend are... the guy looks a little like Lenny Kravitz

Re: What are you listening to?

I’m watching the Super Bowl, so I’ve had to listen to America the beautiful, the anthem, and now the half time show. But I’ve never heard of any of the many performers on display. Did they not manage to book any famous artists this year? Or am I that out of touch with music?

Re: Everything is Political

Not sure what this is about. Tulsi was barely registering any support in the primaries. All I know about her is that She Who Shall Remain Unnamed casually accused her of being a Russian agent, with absolutely no proof, and no repercussions, as usual. gabbard was the lone candidate who pointlessly m...

Re: Everything is Political

I also think that any political analysis based upon adding up the total percentage of votes for "progressives" against the votes for "moderates" is inherently flawed. People just don't vote that way, as much as we'd like to think they do. Bernie was the #2 choice for a lot of Bi...

tulsi gabbard and not warren is the candidate i think most deserving of progressive ire, and the one most likely to be involved if there was any conspiracy going on. Not sure what this is about. had warren known she was going to come third in her home state on super tuesday, she surely would have dropped out to spare herself the embarrassment. Surely? How do you know that? I don’t think anyone thought she was going to win her state, even before the Biden consolidation, so it was very likel...

Re: Everything is Political

“Warren killed the debates” is a highly subjective statement, so I won’t dwell on that. She might have been polling ahead of sanders for a month, but that was probably early on, where the media was desperate to boost anyone who was not sanders, jumping from candidate to candidate, hoping something w...

Re: Everything is Political

I'm pretty sure her only role in the Primaries was to split the Bernie vote Yep, that is essentially what her run amounted to once it was clear she was personally getting no traction. Now whether or not she explicitly coordinated with the Biden campaign, and was asked to stay in the race until afte...

wonder what all the rabid warren haters on the left think of that Good vote by warren. I live in her state, so I’ve heard her answers to questions about Israel in past senate primaries.
