Re: Treasure Trove of Polish Movies Until End of November

Availability was recently extended to the end of December. I made a Letterboxd list of all their narrative feature films (I haven't had time to include animation, shorts, or documentaries):

Re: Haphazard travels of Sir Man Deville around the Middle

yea, it is still standing! That's a relief, because when I see a building in black & white alongside other buildings in color, my immediate guess is that no color photos exist because the structure is long gone. and i always loved the (postmodern before it was cool) design of Chicago Tribune To...

Re: Haphazard travels of Sir Man Deville around the Middle

Fantastic! Especially the building in the first (b&w) picture. It's still standing, I hope? And I'm even more in love with that streetlamp. I remember that crematorium well from the movie. Nice to connect it with the style I just learned about! The city I grew up in, Chicago, has almost no art n...

Re: Haphazard travels of Sir Man Deville around the Middle

Thanks for the pictures and for the architecture lesson! I nearly went into architecture myself (I was accepted at architecture school but decided against it), and I minored in architectural history in college. I hadn't heard of Rondocubism before, and apparently I was mistaken about the building wi...

Re: Haphazard travels of Sir Man Deville around the Middle

That's what I love about Prague, its wild variety of architecture with a respectable and intact collection of gothic, baroque, art nouveau, international style, plus a famous deconstructivist building (the "Dancing Houses") and supposedly the only cubist building in existence (although I'm...

Re: 1943 poll 2.0

If no one's objecting to its use in Lumière d'été then I don't see much reason to discuss it further. If you want to say it's a trope that's vulnerable to misuse I might agree. I've heard that it's common in Spanish cinema as well.

Re: 1943 poll 2.0

Everything I've said so far relates specifically to French films from 1941-1943, and citing "problematic" examples from other countries and other times (mostly later) risks doing an injustice to Grémillon's film. I certainly would not say that personifying a country in a woman is NEVER unj...

Are you really outraged, or just unwilling to elaborate on an assumption you think is self-evident? I can only conclude that you're confusing me with someone else. Yes, I have a male point of view, but believe it or not I'm interested in trying to see things through other points of view as best I ca...

Re: 1943 poll 2.0

If an allegory is any good, as I believe Lumière d'été is, its characters can be human and something else at the same time. And I'm not ready to agree with the 99%. Where did you get that?

Re: 1943 poll 2.0

i guess everyone has already seen lumière d'été. well i hadn't. and that was dumb, cuz this movie was made for me like nothing else in 43 (so far) i ♥ his silent movies, but aside from remorques hadn't had much luck with the sound ones, but he crams everything into this. Heh, I can see how that would work. Unfortunately for me though I can't trust my youthful impressions. A lot of great films didn't look so great on my first viewing (and vice-versa).

I've only recorded my ratings since 2008. Before that I only ranked my highest-rated films (9 or 10/10), and my memory's fuzzy for much of the rest.

I forgot to mention an even bigger advantage to a lbxd list -- you wouldn't need to look up your own ratings separately for each film you've seen.

Re: Doubling the Canon 2021 Update - Phase II: Ratings

Does the ballot exist as a Letterboxd list? That would make it vastly easier to fill out. Instead of stopping laboriously at each line to think whether I've seen the movie or not, I could simply filter the list and then, on the ballot, go straight to each movie I've seen to enter its rating. I'm sur...

I almost always try to watch in one sitting, but if I get sleepy I'd rather pause for a nap than continue watching with reduced attention. One of my peculiarities is that I always aim to finish a film within a single calendar day, because it keeps my diary spreadsheet neater. And yes, this means mid...

Re: Film critics

I wouldn't suggest that a movie should be reduced to a single meaning, but rather that finding clear meaning(s) in it expands the movie, making it more than what it appears to be. And yes, that can and often should mean seeing it more than one way. But I'd rather talk about seeing it multiple ways a...
