Re: cup2020 | round 2 | Khitruk v Williams
I found the repetition of "parece" quite musical - something like Joe Brainard's I Remember , the sort of thing which I find a lot more effective read aloud than on the page. As he usually is, here Williams is doing something which I can't quite grasp but which feels revolutionary, so, tho...

I like the way that the Gilic short transforms from Sisyphus to Tantalus towards the end, but I'm gonna have to go with the crowd on this one, as I also found the Solomon short very moving and beautiful.

After a while, Belson's cosmic imagery just doesn't do anything new for me - though ending on a literally down-to-earth note is a nice touch. The Bernard short, despite its brevity, managed to pack more genuine surprises, so it gets my vote.

Watched Sealed Orders/The Mysterious X on Stumfilm last night, and I'm glad I did, because by golly, that lighting! Final list:
1. Sealed Orders/The Mysterious X (Christensen)
Fantomas (Feuillade)
Cabiria (Pastrone)
The Avenging Conscience (Griffith)

Re: SCFZ poll: Takashi Miike
Tonight I watched First Love , his newest one (assuming he hasn't made like 5 more since 2019). It's been getting a lot of praise and seems to have a reputation as his most gonzo film in a while, but I was let down; it actually seems kind of tame by Miike's standards, though admittedly I've seen ver...

Re: cup2020 | round 1 | Williams v Gilić
It's been a while since I saw Could See a Puma , so I can't say much about it now, but I found it remarkable at the time (and still prefer it to The Human Surge ). Ljubav is a remarkably patient short; lingering so long on those early medium shots of the construction site makes the cut that shows it...

Re: cup2020 | round 1 | Belson v Sastry
Well, I actually liked the music in Fountain of Dreams , and I quite liked some of the imagery, too, but This Bit of That India was much more of a revelation. Bracing, and rather funny, editing makes what sounds fairly dull on paper pretty exciting, and I'm looking forward to seeing more from Sastry...

Director intro: Margaret Tait
Many people here are already familiar with Margaret Tait, at least from her most famous film, A Portrait of Ga . But most people aren't familiar with the breadth of her work, which is often pictured as simply quaint and observational. It is that, but it's poetic first and foremost, in a figurative s...

Re: indian popular cinema
I watched C/o Kancharapalem tonight, and I liked it, though not as much as the consensus. Without spoiling anything, the way the stories developed in the end did elevate it for me, so my assessment might go up after ruminating on it for a bit longer.

Re: cup2020 | round 1 | Khitruk v Solomon
I enjoyed both of these, but I'd be surprised if anything in the rest of the Cup grabs me like Rehearsals for Retirement . I haven't seen much machinima at all so maybe the novelty factor is part of it, but I was totally transfixed and haunted by it. Island is an effective if diffuse satire of human...

Loving Cabiria, but how can any of the Romans take Fulvius Axilla seriously? The dude's name means "armpit"!

Just watched Inside, my 8th Zeki, for this poll, which means we're one step closer to being able to do Zeki for a director poll (under the original rules). I think we'd need one more person with 8+, and rischka at least was at 7 last time we checked.

Hmm, is this the month when I finally watch a Resident Evil film? Do I have to watch the first four or can I just dive right into Retribution?
