Re: 1964 Poll 2.0
I'm wildly behind on '64. Barely seen anything. Preliminary list is: Diary of a Chambermaid - Luis Bunuel Umbrellas of Cherbourg - Jaques Demy Dr. Strangelove - Stanley Kubrick Band of Outsiders - Jean-Luc Godard Seance on a Wet Afternoon - Bryan Forbes Welcome, or No Trespassing - Elem Klimov Oniba...

Re: Letterboxd
I don't understand the idea that "feeling the horror" of a horror film is not something the film achieves. Genre is a social contract between the film and the audience. If we watch a horror film, and we both feel horror, then the contract has been fulfilled. If we watch a Rom-Com and feel ...

Re: Letterboxd
I don't fully agree. I think the piece highlights the ambivalence of genre/tone that the film manages quite well. I like the observation that during the attack scene in the living room which is played kind of zany, but kind of straight (at least for a while), people are reacting in two drastically d...

Re: Letterboxd
That is a great piece, highlights a lot of the things that make the film too intriguing to dismiss. However, I also wasn't particularly in love with the end result. I don't follow charlie, but I stumble across her page occasionally and her tastes are charmingly idiosyncratic. She seems to have a thi...

Re: Letterboxd
I've been thinking about Sean Baker's apparently history making quadruple win for Anora at the Oscars this year. Remembering the most recent Sight And Sound poll, it was incredibly clear how much Janus films, and Criterion in specific, were controlling the narrative of "great films" for co...

Re: CoMo No. 33: Estonia (March, 2025)
Thanks. I was thinking I should check out more Estonian films after Conan's jokes at the Oscars last night. This year I watched the charmingly homemade parody of Texas Chainsaw Massacre called Chainsaws Were Singing by Sander Maran At 2 hours, it felt a little bit patience testing, but there were a ...

I don't think I'm gonna catch any more before the oscars.I usually make more of an effort but I was very uninterested in most of the films this year, and the ones I would have checked out (ex. Seed of the Sacred Fig ) were all so long that I just couldn't squeeze them into my schedule once I decided...

https://cdn.gramedia.com/uploads/items/9789791079525.jpg I just started reading Raden Mandasia: The Beef Thief which has been pretty fun so far. It's designed to feel like a fable, so it has a childish quality, but then such a casual relationship to horrifying violence, it does genuinely feel other...

(barely) Made it to Rotterdam for the film festival. Flight cancellations and slow driving almost cost me the festival... But I was there in time to catch the re-premiere of Bachtiar Siagian's Turang which was very exciting. I quite liked the film, and I'm looking forward to some day saying more of ...

Certainly not the literal next films I plan to see. But I just found some absurdly cheap tickets to Rotterdam. So got some screening tickets for the film festival. Including the re-premiere of Bachtiar Siagian's Turang which is now the 2nd of his 11 films to be found after Suharto's people destroyed...

That's a tough one for me. He's the first filmmaker who truly expanded my ideas of what film was when I was 14 years old, and unlike the other filmmakers I got obsessed with in those years, he's remained just as engaging and unique as I've aged. I did break into his garage once when I was 18. Just t...

My "best of 2024" revealed to me that I didn't really fall in love with anything from 2024 (yet!) but I saw a lot of older stuff that I really connected with this year.

Re: CoMo No. 31: Mongolia (January, 2025)
I believe I've only ever seen a single bonafide Mongolian film. The Two Horses of Genghis Khan (2009) by Byambasuran Davaa, and I thought it was lovely. A semi-documentary about a Pynchonian wild goose chase dealing with Mongolian music/folk history that may have been lost forever, but a very sweet ...

Watched the new Nosferatu . Consistent with my Eggars experiences thus far, I find myself wholly impressed, though not really moved. It's got a strange slow/staccato rhythm that I quite appreciated... but I can't really see what is gained from this version other than maybe immediate visceral thrill....
