Re: 1965 Poll
FG is a remake of his own Desperate Outpost (1959) , which I prefer (in fact it is my favorite Okamoto). It is not a remake. It is an entirely separate story, but in a similar style/setting. Where Desperate Outpost is a gung-ho action comedy with the "likely leads", Fort Graveyard is abou...

Re: 1965 Poll
Now, I have to see it! Should actually have it already, just need to double-check. Prepared a few viewings for this poll yesterday. (Essentially what I had laying around, but somehow Forest of the Hanged was not on the list - it will be my next priority) I may share the list later The first one out ...

Apparently, we have still not done Milos Forman (nor Francis Ford Coppola ...), so that should be a fair bet if all else fails.

Re: SCFZ poll: Marcel Carne
A couple of his 60s films are actually great, namely Wasteland and Three Rooms in Manhattan, but I would not count them among his best work. His work past this point feels tired, and The Marvelous Visit is just embarrassing. I have not seen L'Air du Paris, definitely going to push it higher up my wa...

Yes, I'll try to think of a bigger name! (And hey, we can always try Okamoto too). Will go over the list of directors soon and get back to you.
I'm not sure if nominator counts, but:
Okamoto: 24
Fabri: 14
Kachyna: 13
Vlacil: 12
Szabo: 10

Let's try to shine some light at two of the very best Hungarian directors: Zoltan Fabri or István Szabó
(I'll try Okamoto again next round).
If neither of the above make the cut what about Kachyna or Vlacil?

Re: What I Watched This Month......
I caught 49 films in July. Far less hectic than the last few months, but still a large number. It was also a month filled with great discoveries amidst lukewarm disappointments, and even caught two new (lesser) favourites. There were 3 key trends this month: - 40s (sadly poorly represented among my ...

Hope I can help getting L'Herbier, seen 9. (12 by Duras, 3 by Rollin) Anyhow, I'm really happy Marcel Carné is finally up. I would argue he is the greatest director of classic French cinema (with competition from Renoir and Duvivier of course). Seen 17. 1. Children of Paradise 2. Drole de Drame 3. P...

Thank you so much for the hard work, flip! Personally i am extremely happy, but also almost bewildered about how Die Parallelstrasse made the list (and at #28). The selection is very exciting, and I like how the algorythm places a high preference on key favorites that may only have been seen/loved b...

Re: SCFZ poll: Masaki Kobayashi
Director note: Took a long time digging his way out of passable dramas, but when he did he became one of the best directors in Japan. He's a difficult director for me to get into since he seems so damned sincere in his moralism, little hint of much in the way of irony or ambiguity in values, though...

Re: SCFZ poll: FW Murnau
It's a shame he died in his early 40's, but at least he didn't have a chance to go the way of Lang. You mean directing better films as he grew older? Lang's 20s work is basically as shitty as Murnau's, so who knows, maybe Murnau would have started making great films in the sound era. :? Do you like...

Along with Lang, likely the best director of the 20s (though judging by his two oldest surviving films it may be good for his memory that the rest didn't).
