Re: 1964 Poll 2.0

Goodbye, Boys! is listed as 1966 on IMBd, and this might be one of those occasions where they're correct - made in '64, briefly released in '66 before being banned. IMDb is all over the place with these dates, though. Drahomíra Vihanová's Squandered Sunday, which I didn't get around to seeing for th...

Re: Doubling the Canon 2025 Update - Nominations

Fair enough. I was a little surprised that one of Ray's best films didn't make it onto any of those lists. So how about a Jean Renoir?

Re: 1990 Poll 2.0

This is not an uninteresting year, a lot of great movies (if no outstanding masterpiece), but I despise Goodfellas and Wild at Heart and most other films of their directors. Would at present have to whittle 20 down from this bunch: Freeze, Die, Come to Life (Kanevsky) Close Up (Kiarostami) Open Door...

Doesn't seem to be much enthusiasm for 1944, but I highly recommend one I've seen recently: Louis Daquin's Swiss mountaineers flick Premier de cordée. It'll end up close to the top of the list.

King of the Children is somehow 1988 now. Good ole Imdb! Well, off it goes, and in its place I'll put the Chinese film no one's seen, for a total of two lady Chinese directors for the year - surely a record for the top twenty. And if the mysterious "U Lan," co-director of Girl from Hunan i...

A second recommendation for "Girls' Reformatory." Pic is the Shimizu "formula," yes, but in some directors you don't mind the formula because of the skill with which the movies are made. Only the best manage to escape the formula becoming a mannerism: for me Ozu and Bresson fit i...
