Theo Angelopoulos

After enjoying Landscape in the Mist and Eternity and a Day over a year ago but not delving deeper into Angelopoulos, I’m now working my way chronologically through his filmography after picking up the Artificial Eye collection that contains all of his 13 feature films. I’m only up to his third film...

I should update that actually. I'm based in Norfolk at the moment but hoping to end up back in London or near about eventually.

Re: Favourite albums?

I have a small vinyl collection but gave up my record player as it’s not really feasible in my current home. When I move I’ll be looking at getting a new set up. Some of my favourite albums are… Bob Dylan - Blood on the Tracks Neil Young - Harvest Roy Harper - Stormcock Nick Drake - Five Leaves Left...

Re: SCFZ poll: Krzysztof Kieslowski

Seen 11 Blue Red Dekalog The Double Life of Veronique Blind Chance I have a lot of fondness for Kieslowski and admire his best films for their emotional and moral complexity. The Three Colours Trilogy (well, Blue and Red anyway) and Dekalog were a gateway for me to a wider appreciation of cinema. Be...

Eagerly awaiting the console port. It's due this month, but there's been nothing but radio silence... should say i finished disco elysium since posting last and it more than sticks the landing, all in all it is i think one of the most carefully thought through video game plots i can think of. have ...

I was really into Son of Saul as I was watching it but it left me with the sourest aftertaste. Maybe cuz it felt like The Holocaust: The VR game? was son of saul widely acclaimed? it got into a bunch of major festivals, as is probably pre-ordained for this kind of thing, but i remember nothing but ...

Re: SCFZ poll: Wong Kar-Wai

This is a good debate but to be honest, I think a lot of you have a different thing in mind when you’re using these terms so I don’t think you’re even disagreeing as much as you think you are. For me, there should be an underlying meaning to a film and for a film to be good or great, it has to ‘say’...

Re: Last Watched

Saint Maud was pretty okay as debuts go. I felt that after a decent set up it went a little too safe and predictable in its final third, but there were some nice ideas and Morfydd Clark was very good. Still not sure why they marketed it as a horror though.

Re: Rewatches and Rediscoveries

Once upon a time I worshipped Sergio Leone. I still have soft spots for Once Upon a Time in the West and The Good, The Bad & The Ugly though I hold neither in nearly as high esteem as I once did, but it's been considerably over a decade since I last watched Once Upon a Time in America, and I jus...

Re: Last Watched

A Confucian Confusion is the only Yang I have left to see. Is there a new blu-ray out? Been waiting for that. Really sorry to hear it compared to Mahjong - that was such a sour disappointment to me. Had none of his power, and just felt sloppy. Actually seems like we are fairly aligned on Yang given...

Re: Last Watched

Finally watched all Yang's films with A Confucian Confusion the last and found it really forgettable and disappointing, which is much the same experience I had with Mahjong. It just struck me as a try too hard comedy. Not really sure what he was up to with those two when the rest of his filmography ...

Is there any benefit to Patron vis-a-vis Pro? Sort of considering getting Pro just to get rid of undesirable feed stuff, etc., as I'm stuck with the site now and should make the most of it. But Patron? Something vague about beta testing and having it say Patron next to your name? Look, will it give...

Re: Last Watched

Just finished A Hidden Life and it is the best Malick for me since The Thin Red Line. This sort of film with morality at its heart wouldn't generally interest me, because nine times out of ten it will be spoiled by sentiment and romanticism, but Malick does a very good job of putting you in the char...

Re: what are you reading?

Finally got around to reading Krasznahorkai’s Satantango. I’ve been wanting to read him for a long time, given my interest in Tarr’s adaptations and other films with Krasznahorkai, but was a little wary because I kept hearing about these insanely long sentences and I gave up on Proust for that very ...

Re: Most Anticipated Films of 2020

I realised I hadn't watched a single 2020 film when my Letterboxd Year in Review hit my inbox a few days ago. Obviously external events have impacted most on that, but thinking on it, there's not really a great deal I would have wanted to see anyway. I plan on watching Hong Sang-soo's The Woman Who ...

I tracked down a film I’ve been interested in for a while, Sürkület (English translation: Twilight), by the Hungarian director Gyorgy Feher.
