1947 Poll 2.0

Post by Evelyn Library P.I. »

Choose your favourite films from 1947 (according to IMDB).

Each person can vote for up to 20 films. Do not feel compelled to fill the maximum allowable number.

Twenty-film ballots can be formatted as follows:
- Five tiers of four films each, 4/4/4/4/4; scored 5-4-3-2-1 pts/film/tier
- Four tiers of five films each, 5/5/5/5; scored 4.5-3.5-2.5-1.5 pts/film/tier
- Two tiers of ten films each, 10/10; scored 4-2 pts/film/tier
- No tiers, unranked; scored 3 pts/film
- A 20-film three-tier ballot is not possible

A tiered ballot can include less than 20 films, but in that case the total number of films must still be able to be factored by the number of tiers, so:
- A five tier ballot can include only 20, 15, 10, or 5 films
- A four tier ballot can include only 20, 16, 12, 8, or 4 films
- A three tier ballot (scored 5-3-1) can include only 18, 15, 12, 9, 6, or 3 films
- A two tier ballot can include only 20, 18, 16, 14, 12, 10, 8, 6, 4, or 2 films
- Ballots that are 19, 17, 13, 11, 7 or 1 films must be no tiers

Users are urged to post their provisional lists as soon as possible, so that others can use them for recommendations. You may revise your lists at any point prior to the deadline.

Deadline for 1947 ballots will be Friday, June 30th at roughly midnight EDT.

I just learned there are two movies from 1947 both called (in English translation) Devil in the Flesh!! Carlos Hugo Christensen's Con el diablo en el cuerpo as well as Claude Autant-Lara's Le Diable au corps.

Quite a coincidence! Anyway, if you vote for both or either, make it clear which one you're voting for :D

this is THE perfect film to begin 1947 (given zynab's past username)....made by the army to berate the blind idiocy of british subjects, a reminder that cinema was historically one of the many arms of the military-industrial complex

Trying to see if I can score tickets to a screening of a nitrate print to Black Narcissus tonight. Not sure how hard that's going to be, but if possible that'll be a fun way to get to that one which I have not seen yet.

:)

seems to be quite polarizing. on letterboxd all the (declared) girls i follow have hearted it, ditto the spanish and portuguese guys, plus jerry the texan from the old days. not sure what that says about the film.....i can't remember anything other than it was gorgeous, and there were some subtleties that i could not possibly recall now but maybe also george sanders was cute in it? (he's always adorable tho)

my favorite role for linda darnell!

i've pointedly left out of the past out of my list as it was my favorite film for many years. i'm more of a noir girl than sally :p

i also love odd man out, brighton rock, pursued, they made me a fugitive, the kneeling goddess, etc

and i have a few to watch so my list is probably not final

FWIW, Christensen's Diablo En El Cuerpo is a rom-com and doesn't play by any of the generic rules that title would suggest (not noirish nohow. Or nothin'.) I don't see it making anybody's lists, even if they watch it...

Ah ok; I'll probably save it for towards the end of the month. I love me some Carlos Hugo Christensen but after taking a closer look, this doesn't seem like it would be among my favorites of his, let alone the top 20 films of 1947.

Kicked off my month of 1947 with Fritz Lang's SECRET BEYOND THE DOOR. It pains me that I don't love this more, but it's super disjointed...it's REBECCA but janky and demented with a ponderous script. I did like it but it's not a film I would rank highly compared to other "women's noir" or films from 1947.

Watched Black Narcissus on its original Nitrate print last night, packed house full of people travelling from all over just to watch nitrate prints.

It'll definitely go on my list. I really liked it. Honestly, I liked when it went baroque and gothic, and wish it had laid all that on a bit thicker. But the lighting/color (which was sort of dim/murky in nitrate, though I have nothing to compare it to) was beautiful. The early sequence where David Farrar is introducing the "palace" feels like it predicts the opening of Last Year at Marienbad and also Duras works like Agatha and the Limitless Readings.

Crowd was full of film studies grad students, programmers, archivists, and all around film dweebs, which was a blessing and a curse. Guy behind me couldn't seem to resist rattling off trivia about the movie every 2 or 3 shots. Sometimes film nerds prefer talking about the films to actually experiencing them. Everyone also needed to laugh really hard at every slightly humorous moment, including those that fall flat (snarky comments by Aya, etc.) which felt like performative engagement rather than genuine. But a lot of people were genuinely rapt, and the energy in the room was really cool and contributed overall to feeling like you were out at an "event" movie. Which I don't get to experience too often anymore.

Anyway, everyone already knows this, but Black Narcissus is pretty good!
