SCFZ poll: Catherine Deneuve

Post by MrCarmady »

The rules:

- I'll assume ballots are ranked unless you tell me otherwise. Unranked ballots are fine.

- Deadline for ballots: Tuesday the 28th of February

We'll use the extended rules for this poll:

• If you have seen an odd number of Deneuve films, you can round up instead of down when determining the length of your ballot (e.g. if you have seen 7, you can list 4 films instead of the usual 3)

• If you have seen more than 10 Deneuve films, your ballot can extend beyond 5 films (e.g. if you have seen 13, you can list up to 7)
However, the max number allowed in total is 10 even if you've seen 21+.

Thought I'd get the ball rolling on these again with two French greats. Considered Binoche and Huppert as well but feel like they're still very much active. Not that Deneuve isn't, but I feel like the bulk of her work is behind her. Would love to poll the other two at some point as well. Get the nominations in for the next two in March and I'll let the randomiser decide!

thought i'd seen more, only seen ten, unfortunately seen most of these so long ago i have no idea how to rank them but i'll take a guess (ranking based on performance, not quality of filmmaking) :

Belle de Jour (Luis Bunuel)
The Last Metro (Francois Truffaut)
The Umbrellas of Cherbourg (Jacques Demy)
Pola X (Leos Carax)
La Chamade (Alain Cavalier)

a strange star/actress in some ways. will also say i've seen less from her than i had assumed i'd seen. wish there were subs for her movie with vecchiali.

letterboxd says I've seen only 18 of her films (I thought I'd seen way more).
I was never a fan of her as an actress (I more or less dislike her and her acting), but she starred in so many great movies!!!
Apparently, directors love here (I absolutely can't see why, though).

Really hard to limit myself to a mere 9:

01. Thieves (Andre Techine, 1996)
02. The Young Girls of Rochefort (Jacques Demy, 1967)
03. Place Vendôme (Nicole Garcia, 1998)
04. 8 Women (Francois Ozon, 2002)
05. Celebration (Olivier Meyrou, 2007)
06. I’m Going Home (Manoel de Oliveira, 2001)
07. Pola X (Leos Carax, 1999)
08. The Hunger (Tony Scott, 1983)
09. Tom Thumb (Olivier Dahan, 2001)

i was going to write that she becomes much stronger as an actress as she ages, but it may be that when she was young directors wanted a certain kind of blank quality from her (this is certainly true in the bunuel movies), and only later is she asked to be an actress rather than a star or icon?

haven't seen the movies she did with techine, a director who is a big blind spot for me in general, but i know people hold her performances in those in pretty high esteem.

I've only seen one Techine, which was L'Adieu a la nuit. I thought the movie was really bad (islamaphobic in a really boring way) and it discouraged me from checking out his other work. BUT... Deneuve was very good in it.

I'm going to watch one more movie this weekend and close this, not expecting any more ballots at this point. Same for JLT. Quick question to those who have seen it, though, my DVD of Tristana has both the Spanish and the French version on it, anyone know which one I should be going for?
