SCFZ poll: Henry Hathaway

Post by flip »

Polling the films of Henry Hathaway

The rules:

- your list can include no more than half* of the Hathaway films you've seen, up to a maximum of 8. So if you've seen 6 films, you can vote for 3, and if you've seen 20, you can vote for up to 8.

* If you've seen an odd number, you can round up when deciding the length of your ballot -- e.g if you've seen 7, you can vote for 4, and if you've seen 15, you can vote for the maximum of 8.

- i'll assume ballots are ranked unless you tell me otherwise. unranked ballots are fine.

- deadline for ballots: next Tuesday, in seven days, whatever day that is

umbugbene created an index on letterboxd of all of our previous polls here: letterboxd.com/umbugbene/list/index-of-all-scfz-director-polls/

interesting poll because outside of the top couple of films, there wasn't much consensus about which hathaway films are most worthwhile, and the early, mid-period and late hathaway films all got a fair bit of support. and 25 (edit: 31!!!) different hathaway films got a vote, which is still not even half of his output, but it seems like a lot to me. he made only two films that received a best picture nomination, and neither fared well (lives of a bengal lancer, and how the west was won both finished outside the top 15).

that's cool with me, the more informed the ballots are, the better the poll! i was going to watch a whole slate of hathaway films for this, but then i watched two of his obscurities and was underwhelmed and kind of lost interest. :(

one thing i did find interesting was i've seen 17 hathaway films, and for most directors i'd think that would give me some handle on their most appreciated work, but some ballots in this thread i've seen not even one film from, so i might have missed a lot of hathaway's best
