SCFZ poll: Jack Arnold

Post by flip »

Polling the films of Jack Arnold

The rules:

- your list can include no more than half of the Arnold films you've seen, up to a maximum of 5. So if you've seen seven of his films, for example, you can list only a top 3. It's only if you've seen ten or more of his films than you can list the maximum of five.

- i'll assume ballots are ranked unless you tell me otherwise. unranked ballots are fine.

- deadline for ballots: next Tuesday, in seven days, whatever day that is

umbugbene created an index on letterboxd of all of our previous polls here: letterboxd.com/umbugbene/list/index-of-all-scfz-director-polls/

and let's use extended rules:

• if you've seen an odd number, you can round up instead of down when deciding the length of your ballot
• if you've seen more than 10, you can vote for more than 5

Seen 7. I've liked what I've seen and think he was a talented genre craftsperson, but I'd need to see more to attain a more comprehensive view.

1. Creature from the Black Lagoon (1954)
2. Red Sundown (1956)
3. It Came from Outer Space (1953)
4. Man in the Shadow (1957)

i'll confess i was hoping no name on the bullet (one of the great westerns, imo) would fare better in this poll, but arnold's more famous sci-fi films took the top couple of spots. maybe if i'd seen those two films i'd be more enthusiastic about the results, so i'll make a point of trying to watch them:

results
1. The Incredible Shrinking Man (1957) — 17 pts
2. Creature from the Black Lagoon (1954) — 13 pts
3. Red Sundown (1956) — 11 pts
4. No Name on the Bullet (1959) — 9.5 pts
5. High School Confidential (1958) — 4 pts
5. Revenge of the Creature (1955) — 4 pts
7. It Came From Outer Space (1953) — 3.3 pts
8. Monster on the Campus (1958) — 3 pts
8. Tarantula (1955) — 3 pts
10. The Glass Web (1953) — 2 pts
11. Man in the Shadow (1957) — 1.5 pts
12. With These Hands (1950) — 1 pt
12. The Man from Bitter Ridge (1955) — 1 pt
14. Hello Down There (1969) — 0.1 pts

If it'd been Creature from the Black Lagoon on top, then the argument for No Name on the Bullet would be a stronger one, from where I sit, as No Name is possibly a more singular western than Creature is as a horror film or whatever other genre one might consider it, but Incredible Shrinking Man is a more singular movie than No Name I think, so it deserves the recognition all other things being equal. (I voted Creature higher than No Name myself out of a personal fondness, but could see the argument for the latter as better without much problem.)

Yeah, but as the outstanding Arnold western is RED SUNDOWN, all things considered, the ranking is quite alright. Even though NO NAME ON THE BULLET is way too high, imo.
