It made the list last year with just 8 votes. Unfortunately the other great Capellani, L'assommoir (1908), did not have the same luck.

am completely baffled by the lack of attention germinal has in general film awareness. perhaps it's because all the techno-eyed film-geeks saw no advancement in technique and so ignored it in their histories. well sod them. being adapted from zola helps give the stereotypes depth and makes the characters more subtle than anything else i've seen from that year, and capellani's composition is lovely. have seen a few mining community films and this one outshines a lot of the talkies, i guess until someone like ford has a bash at it. i even forgot i was watching a silent film i was so invested. (didn't weep as much as i did at ingeborg holm tho)

It does not seem to have been redistributed after 1918, undoubtedly because of the socio-political context of national union, after the war. Hence its complete disappearance in the tradition of classical historiography of cinema.

woohoo! just logged my 100th 1913 film! (although letterboxd thinks its 101 because it insists ma l'amor mio non muore is 1913 when imdb has that as 1914)

gonna have to start whittling my remaining ones down as not going to get them all in. really like mack sennett but don't like fatty or mabel. anyone recommend some of his from 1913 that don't have those two in?

You must be second only to PUNQ at this point. The amount of films from this period with only one comment on lboxd, a one star review by PUNQ...kinda feel bad for some of them lol.

Really interesting posts about language! Evelyn, why did you decide to learn Latin? I would badly like to, being an eytmology nut, but not until if/when i become fluent enough to speak with nationals in german and french. I wonder if I'm going about the order wrong lol

I noticed that -- less strongly -- with Life Of Wagner, as well; there were elements in place that still work to create sympathy/identification with the characters, in spite of the archaic factors that inhibit such. Glad somebody likes the Sennetts, they've been almost a dead loss for me. Haven't seen any Keystones that weren't Fatty and Mabel, but there's a Thanhauser that's Sennett-adjacent/more sophisticated that you might enjoy, The Farmer's Daughters. Kinda butts up against that 1910 guy we liked, Bennett or w/e his name was.

speaking of travelogues, just watched what may be the epic daddy of them all for 1913, life of the jews in palestine. yes it's propaganda, but could hardly believe it was filmed in 1913 (possible because lack of edwardian style dress) lovely, for all that.

i've seen the farmer's daughters, watched it ages ago but can't consider it because it's also the name of the first porn i ever saw, on scratchy vhs wrestled triumphantly by a boyfriend from an actual 'dodgy bloke in the pub' and nothing else with the same name is ever going to overlay that experience....(of mainly the horrendous cheesiness of the 1970's)

but i am still intoxicated with the tragic tenor of 'max, toreador'. the farce of the first half against the almost protestingly real max (by all accounts an actual competent bullfighter) of the ending....am haunted by this....

A few reasons, but the main one is that for my academic work many of the texts I want to study are originally in Latin. I also figured learning Latin first would lay a good foundation for then learning French and German and other modern European languages that are largely derived from Latin.

Now that I've started, though, it's become an end in itself, rather than a means to reading texts. The biggest thing that keeps me at it is just the pleasure of grammar and etymology - it's been like learning English for the second time at a deeper level, partly because I have a richer understanding of English grammar but especially because so many English words derive from Latin. You begin to see how beneath the garden of everyday language lies a bed of ancient roots (a pretty phrase I'm stealing from Nicola Gardini).

um, capellani's de afwezige is not quite in the same league as germinal, but he throws everything at it (what was the obsession with dutch stuff in this period? i've never seen so many dogs pulling carts) camera moves on three occasions and not being used to that lately it was SO disorientating. but had cute man so i recovered

Speaking of musicals, like we were, I notice that Der Tangokonigen describes iself as "ein fim mit tanz und musik" -- as if they might have been thinking that the sliding and gliding onscreen with the live performance in the auditorium would do the work of creating the carefree gaiety we associate with musical theatre...
