a very good month, and start to the year, except for pathaan, which is the first movie i've walked out of as an adult (happy for srk though). all watched in the theater except for the two tv series (yurei deco is good, heike is genuinely great).

edit - i did go see poulenc's dialogues of the carmelites at the met opera.

just saw on the front page (of the webpage) of nyt, that movie is the subject of an article, i guess there's some political controversy surrounding it, didn't read the whole thing:

that times article is a little right and kind of misleading at the same time.

for the last 5+ years there has been an attempt by india's ascendent far right/hindu nationalist factions to use the hindi/bollywood industry as a soft target for secularist values. so you had a situation in 2017 where right wing activists destroyed sets on bhansali's paadmavat, beat the director and offered rewards for cutting off the nose of deepika padukone; the movie ended up being a hit anyway and ironically as right wing as much of a right wing fantasy as you can get (muslims as debauched invaders, sparkling rajput heroes, hindu women immolating themselves to protect their purity). it all gets really weird with the death by suicide of the young actor sushant singh rajput, which gets turned into a q-anon level complex conspiracy theory about drug use in the hindi film industry that ends in the arrest of srk's son on trumped up drug possession charges (all dismissed).

so all that was brought up again with pathaan, but none of it really seemed to stick, and i think it is a stretch to say that the last dismal few years of failure in the hindi film industry were from right wing boycotts/violence rather than a truly terrible stretch of movies. and the industry has been floundering for years - pathaan's collections should be the minimum for this sort of would be blockbuster, rather than the peak...

edit - it is telling that the ny times ran an anthropological culture trend piece on the movie but hasn't bothered to review it, despite it opening in the us box office top five
