A Bong poll could be interesting, even if just to see if anyone vouches for anything outside the 6 films that are widely seen.

I've seen 3 by both but I already earmarked Bong's remaining films to watch in the near future, should I let you know when I get to 8 and we do him then?

i agree a bong poll would be interesting, if nothing else to see if scfz accepts or rejects the outside consensus around parasite. it sounds like a bong poll will work better a bit later on, if mrcarmady will be watching several more, and a mel brooks poll clearly will work. so i'm making an executive decision, we'll do the brooks poll now, and next time holymanm (or anyone else) wants to nominate bong, we'll poll him then (though probably best to wait a month or two for that so he gets more views).

the most surprising thing, to me, about the results -- even though 20 different wajda films got some support in our poll, his palme d'or winning film, man of iron, did not receive a single vote. and man of marble, which i had thought was also among wajda's best-known films, only barely made the top ten.

unfortunately we have a tie for first. so we'll need to do a tiebreaker vote unless a new ballot comes in today. you can only vote in the tiebreaker if you have seen both of the films that tied for first: kanal and ashes and diamonds - just post the one you prefer below. from ballots posted already, i can infer votes from seven people already, plus the votes from holymanm and brian d posted below:

votes for kanal:
flip
john ryan
greg x
holymanm
brian d

votes for a+d:
mesnalty
umbugbene
st gloede
oscarwerner

i'll make a final determination of the winner in a day or two, so if you'd like to vote in the tiebreaker, please do so soon!

results

1. Kanal (1957) -- 29.05 pts
2. Ashes and Diamonds (1958) -- 29.04 pts
3. The Maids of Wilko (1979) -- 11 pts
4. The Promised Land (1975) -- 9 pts
5. Innocent Sorcerers (1960) -- 8 pts
6. Without Anesthesia (1978) -- 7 pts
7. Korczak (1990) -- 6 pts
8. Zemsta (2002) -- 5 pts
8. A Generation (1955) -- 5 pts
8. Man of Marble (1977) -- 5 pts
11. A Chronicle of Amorous Accidents (1986) -- 4 pts
11. Siberian Lady Macbeth (1963) -- 4 pts
13. Everything for Sale (1969) -- 3 pts
13. The Birch Wood (1970) -- 3 pts
15. Danton (1983) -- 2 pts
15. Holy Week (1995) -- 2 pts
15. The Ashes (1965) -- 2 pts
18. The Possessed (1988) -- 1 pt
18. Landscape After Battle (1970) -- 1 pt
18. A Love in Germany (1983) -- 1 pt

I didn't like "Man of Iron", that's the reason it got no vote from me. Pretty pedestrian film, the Palme was purely for political reasons.
