wow greennui, amazing work! thanks for compiling all of that.

my favourite polls we've ever done are the country/region polls, for me those offer the most new things to discover. the year polls have always been great too. i also like the “The best unknown filmmaker in the world" list, which i'm still updating occasionally on letterboxd, and if anyone wants to nominate a filmmaker or two for that list, you can just add a comment on letterboxd or pm me here (i'll see a pm long before a comment, probably).

iirc the country polls are ongoing and open, correct? in the years and years since most began, i've added enough to my seenography that i could actually contribute to some by now

the ones i ran are not ongoing, no, but maybe the ones that others ran (mario and lencho and maybe others?) are, i don't know.

i haven't given any thought to revisiting them, but if i was going to run some new ones, i'd just do them again from scratch. i do sort of feel we'd get more canonical results for a lot of countries now than before, just because we've lost some people (though maybe i could use their old ballots), but if we did a japan poll and seven samurai won, i'm not sure what the point would be exactly. but then there are countries from which people here have definitely watched a ton over the last few years, like india in your and nrh's case, or africa in brian's case if i remember correctly, or iran in my case, so some lists might be interesting to do again for that reason, with more knowledgeable voters.

not something i was planning to do soon, in any case.

i’d definitely be able to contribute fairly knowledgeably to an africa poll now, not sure who ran that one. the spain/portugal poll got updated once, and i wouldn’t mind retallying if there are new votes. the old votes would stay though to keep the flavor of the previous scfz alive.

I had intended the Mexico poll to be subject to annual updates, but there wasn't enough interest to make doing that feasible. And I'm definitely in favor of updating other countries I wasn't involved in doing -- I'm as interested in how tastes (individual or collective) develop and mature over time as I am in anything else those lists could show. We''ve lost some distinctive voices, but I don't think many of the people we've picked up recently are exactly going to regurgitate textbook opinions for country polls.

Maybe now? Maybe later?

The ones I ran are, yes.
They also aren't weren't polls, but threads with lists of your favorite films. I never intended to compile and poll any of the individual lists, if I remember correctly, cause personally I'm not interested in polls.
All I'm interested in is individual lists.

I see I wrote in the Yugoslavia-thread: "But I'm always much more interested in individual lists anyway, so I don't care really, if we will poll this or not. "

Thinking about it, I'd actually love to start a new thread on Cinema from Yugoslavia, Germany and Italy (and others) where everyone can list up to 100 favorites and edit their lists continuosly as they watch more and discover new favorites.
But my new rule would be: no polling allowed!

Maybe some more specific plunges into certain countries' cinematic history might prove fruitful? Like Weimar Republic cinema, French Impressionist cinema, Japanese silent cinema and so forth...

Also, judging from the recent 2010's poll, decade polls could be really interesting exercises that could really reflect SCFZ.
