Three down

#snowcel update

White Nights, Visconti 1958
Great but Bresson did it better but there is nothing like snow in black and white, the last part probably added a full point to the score
3.5/5

Chilly Scenes of Winter, Joan Micklin Silver, 1979
I'm of two minds about this movie, on the one hand I can't believe my crash has a bf but on the other hand I miss my ex from 5 years ago
5/5

Wonderful movie. I saw two other great ones from Joan micklin silver this year: Hester street and (my favorite of the two) crossing Delancey.

also can't recommend her fitzgerald adaptation berenice bobs her hair, starring shelly duvall, enough. i think there might be a version on prime in better quality than the one on kg.

Oh yeah. I saw that one too. It think it was on a Dan sallitt ‘network tv canon’ list. I don’t remember a thing, so I guess it did not register, but I think I had seen it before her feature-length movies, so maybe a rewatch is in order.

MEET ME IN ST. LOUIS -- a film that fills me with the heartwarming desire to strangle that fucking brat Tootie.

surprisingly average to me include Kinski, Trintignant, Morricone's score, using flashback, etc... until surprisingly downbeat last act(most wtf western I've ever seen, probably). that unforgettable bleakness felt a bit show-offish, though

It's def snw szn at the moment where I live. Probably snowed more in the last two weeks than the whole of last winter combined. I''m already sick of it though as it prevents me from running in the forest. Gonna watch some warmer films instead!!

1962 poll No8:
WINTERCOURSE (Paul Sharits)
Considered destroyed, this early ‘haiku-imagistic film’ was rediscovered in the summer of 1985.
the film (the earliest surviving work by Paul Sharits) is possibly heavily inspired by Stan Brakhage‘s Wedlock House: An Intercourse (1959). According to Sharits’ biography, he began a mentorship and friendship with Brakhage around this time while he was studying Fine Art at the University of Denver’s School of Art.

Wedlock House documents the early marriage between Brakhage and his first wife Jane. The film shows them making love as well as arguing. Wintercourse — perhaps named as a take-off of the “intercourse” of Wedlock House: An Intercourse — features chilly scenes of winter outdoors and a woman lounging around indoors, whom I’m assuming to be Sharits’ wife Frances.

The film is a choppy, cubist interpretation of what one does in the winter, mostly enjoying each other’s company indoors, watching TV, trudging through the snow, admiring the local architecture rising out of the blank white ground. Then, the film ends on a springtime scene of a happy couple kissing, finally able to comfortably enjoy the outdoors.
