1999 poll

Post by Lencho of the Apes »

Choose your favorite films from 1999 (according to IMDb).

– Each person votes for up to 20 movies. Do not feel compelled to fill the maximum allowable number, if you're enthusiastic about fewer than twenty.
– Do not rank the films except the number 1, it gets two points..

Users are urged to post their provisional lists as soon as possible so that others may use them for recommendations. You may, of course, revise your lists at any point prior to the deadline.

Ballots posted by new members who have not participated in other parts of the forum will not be counted.

Deadline for 1999 lists will be Friday, Nov 1st at approximately 1 PM Pacific Time.

Mine own paltry rec.s, from The year that molded the tastes of a whole generation of filmbros

Ave Maria - Rossoff
Del olvido al no me acuerdo - Rulfo
En un claroscuro de la luna - Olhovich
La Ley De Herodes - Estrada
M/Other - Suwa

I guess Evelyn and Magpies will be sitting this one out... Sorry about that.

I've posted my watchlist on a different page this time, because that will allow me to add more detailed information to the list.

No worries! - it comes as a relief, tbh, as I need to spend October on school. Still have a short watchlist of '99 flickers that I'll try to dip into, time permitting.

Well mainly cuz I don't know where to start & if I did, its the getting hold of them that'll stop me. 1999 gets more policed on YouTube than the 30's

Not a detestable year for film. I'll try to see a few more but at the end of this week I'm going on vacation for a few weeks of blissful interweblessness at the seashore with the better half: hammock and a stack of books and no bloody screens. Will try to post a final list before I go:

Adieu, plancher des vaches!

The Wind Will Carry Us
Willow and Wind (Mohammad-Ali Talebi)* - 2000 on LB, for those've seen it
Herr Zwilling und Frau Zuckermann (Volker Koepp)
Peppermint Candy (Lee Chang-dong) - also 2000 on LB
The Nanny (Marco Bellocchio)
Throne of Death (Murali Nair)
Color of Paradise (I know Magpies hates this, but I enjoy all of Mr. Majidi's films)
Sunshine (István Szabó)
Hanele (Karel Kachyňa)
La Lettre (Oliveira)
Ordinary Heroes (Ann Hui)
One Day in the Life of Andrei Arsenevich
Not One Less
Poppoya (Furuhata Yasuo)*
The Sound of a Violin in Mỹ Lai (Trần Văn Thủy)*
Limbo
The Uprising (Park Kwang-su)
Happy End (Jung Ji-woo)
My Best Fiend

Would watch if I had time:

Darkness and Light (Chang Tso-chi)
My Heart (Bae Chang-ho)
Genesis (Cheick Oumar Sissoko)
Vanaprastham
So Close to Paradise
Iran Is My Land*
Hemlock (Behruz Afkhami)*
Topsy Turvy
Luna Papa
Postmen in the Mountains*
Ikitai (Shindo Kaneto)
To Be or Not to Be (Kianoush Ayari)*
Aksuat (Serik Aprimov)*
The Sawyers (Duc Vuong)*
Life, Autumn (Loznitsa)*
Mistress of the House of Kanooru (Girish Karnad)* (this has no IMDb, surprisingly, but is listed as 1999 by its Wikipedia article)

* = on Youtube

More interesting year than I'd thought.

TOPSY TURVY (Leigh)
TIME REGAINED (Ruiz)
TITUS (Taymor)
EYES WIDE SHUT (Kubrick)
TABOO (Oshima)

So far. I should revisit BRINGING OUT THE DEAD, and maybe MAGNOLIA, but I doubt my feelings have changed much about the Anderson. Wild horses couldn't get me to sit through that stupid thing about Malkovich again.
These matters are best disposed of from a great height. Over water.
