I was about to post in the stop the lists thread but then thought this forum could use a letterboxd thread.

I haven't been able to access any profile pages today, is it the same for everyone or is it just me?

I just noticed lots of new filters in that filtering tab, show liked/rated/reviewed films + show/hide shorts/documentaries and whatnot...Kinda useful, can't recall many new features since joining up.

Does lboxd periodically delete films? I didn't watch anything for a couple of weeks and my # of films went down

Why would they delete films from the database?!

Imputations of pornographic content is one reason. On another occasion maybe two years ago they did a concerted purge of "amateur productions" that they deemed not to have a commercial profile worthy of their attention.

Yeah, they tend to delete stuff they don't consider "fitting" from time to time.
One more reason to stick to imdb, where any amateur filmmaker can have their own profile (and any porn movie can be added).

Letterboxd removes duplicate entries. Letterboxd and its users, or TMDB, or both will also remove most TV shows and music videos and advertisements and other things that people add that aren't movies. (Unless it's directed by Lynch or PTA or someone, in which case it's apparently fair game to be on the site, which I don't like). My understanding is that users who want to be able to log TV on Letterboxd will add entries for tv shows on TMDB but mislabel them as 'movies' so that they can be added to Letterboxd, and those will be sorted out from time to time. I didn't know they did a purge of 'amateur' productions, but I would think that's uncommon? There's a lot of amateur and avant-garde content on Letterboxd that doesn't have an IMDB page, and I've taken them to be quite welcoming of that content (capitalist promotional banners, notwithstanding), which is one of the reasons I prefer Letterboxd to IMDB.

i don't remember too much about this, but there were a few letterboxd users who were uploading their own home-produced videos to tmdb/letterboxd, things that had never screened anywhere besides maybe on youtube. i think letterboxd tried to remove those at one point, but i'm not sure what attitude the site takes to those films now.

I recently watched Café Flesh (from 1982 so even after the Golden Age you refer to) and it's so much more 'art film' than 'porno', no idea why you'd delete something like that. If Intimacy and The Brown Bunny can be on there...

As for deleting pornography, Letterboxd is set up so that if and when a movie is marked as 'adult' on TMDB, then it will be automatically removed from Letterboxd or will not be able to be imported to Letterboxd. The founder of Letterboxd expressed interest in making exceptions for historically important or artful pornography, but that was four years ago and nothing has changed.

I've seen a lot of letterboxd users complain that Letterboxd is making judgment calls all the time as to what counts or doesn't count as adult or TV or whatnot, but it's worth remembering that in most cases it's the userbase on TMDB making decisions and that automates what happens on Letterboxd.

Yeah, I don't think I've seen any Marco Ferreri but I can't be sure without letterboxd. I've got icm as well but filmographies on there are often incomplete.

i have the opposite problem, i love ferreri, fairly sure i've seen 9 but it may be more. bloody letterboxd
