ok that was harrowing. it's very atmospheric. different mood than most gosho i've seen. full on melodrama of a young woman with the worst possible luck. the soundtrack is insistent and spooky. the power of superstition used to subjugate women is a tragedy for the ages and this is one of the more depressing films i've seen





and like eve she takes the fall. i can't vote for it. it's a prime example of the women's suffrage genre and even sally gave it 2.5 stars. it is quite compelling. i could not turn it off tho i often wanted to. gosho is one of my favorite japanese directors

Finishing up my 1965 viewing with three of the year's Beach Party-themed movies.

(1) Beach Blanket Bingo — Buster Keaton appears in this one, decked out in his get-up for The Railrodder. Somehow both lousy and endearing.
(2) Dr. Goldfoot and the Bikini Machine — Exactly what I'd always hoped it would be: Sixties time capsule delight, with perhaps Vincent Price's most Vincent Price-y performance. Serious question: is this a joke fantasy analogy for James H. Nicholson (Dr. Goldfoot) and Samuel Z. Arkoff (Igor) running American International Pictures as a bikini movie machine?
(3) The Beach Girls and the Monster — Cheapie mash-up of beach party movies and creature features, directed by and starring Jon Hall. Not recommended, though the creature design is endearing enough.

I caught Suzuki's Born Under a Bad Star and most of Kei Kumai's The Japanese Archipeligo. The former is utterly bland and weak - well shot, but too many overtly childish jokes with little to make up for it. The latter is just ... essentially pathetic. Kumai's second film. His next The Sands of Kurobe is a decent, but bland big production. I suppose he was still far from finding his footing when he went to handle this awfully written US military focused story. Some decent visuals is its only saving grace.

Ah, I got a spring for the thirsty from some ad in a magazine through the post in the days before downloading, one of the first 'beyond what the shops sell' movies I ever got. And was completely blown away with. Will always be fond of it.
