SCFZ 10th Anniversary Poll: Ballots

Post by flip »

the SCFZ 10th Anniversary Poll is now open! this is a poll to identify our community's favourite films from cinema history. the rules:

• you can vote for up to 100 films
• short films and tv movies are eligible, tv shows and tv series are not
• your ballot can be ranked in up to five tiers of equal size (actually, they can be unequal, but only if lower-ranked tiers are at least as big as higher ones, so it's fine to do a 33-33-34 breakdown, or a 5-20-20-20-20, but not a 17-16-14-16, or 21-19-14-12 or 11-10-14 say)
• scoring as follows: 5 tiers 6-5-4-3-2.... 4 tiers: 5.5-4.5-3.5-2.5... 3 tiers: 5-4-3... 2 tiers: 5-3.... unranked: 4
• if you really want to give the most weight to favourites, it's best to use five tiers, and if you want to give a lot of films average points, one or two tiers would better achieve that
important: *please* format each film title on your ballot as follows:

English Title (Director, Year)

so like this:

The Karate Dog (Bob Clark, 2004)

• please do not list the country of production, alternate titles (unless the film would otherwise be hard to identify), or titles in the original language, unless the original language title is the most commonly used title of the film (so Ikiru and La Dolce Vita would be the right titles to use, but 하녀 or طعم گیلاس... or Welt am Draht would not). and i'm anti-capitalist and usually do not use capital letters, but for this poll, i'd appreciate it if people would capitalize titles in the traditional way, so i can copy/paste from ballots without needing to standardize all the capitalization myself

also please do not use any diacritics or accents in film or director names, no matter how much that offends your sense of correctness -- the problem is, if i search for "joao cesar monteiro", and someone has typed "joão césar monteiro", my search won't find the duplicate, so i might miss some votes (thanks for the reminder brian!)

i really need everyone to type up their ballots in the same way so i can identify repeated votes (by finding repeated text strings). if anyone does not format their ballot in this way, i have to do it, so it makes me do a lot of work on a poll that is already a lot of work

if i forgot anything let me know!

deadline: up for discussion, i'll say april 30, 2024 for now, but if people think that's too soon i don't mind when we close the voting

Re: SCFZ 10th Anniversary Poll: Ballots

Post by flip »

i think this may not be the most recent scfz top 100 ballots thread (i couldn't find a more recent one though), but maybe it will help some people here get a head start on a new ballot, without needing to type everything up all over again:

https://scfzforum.org/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?t=552

and since i may do this myself, i wanted to say: i don't mind if people look over other ballots, and let that influence their own somewhat. so if you like five different hong sang-soo or yasujiro ozu or eric rohmer films roughly equally, and want to vote for one or two of them, there's nothing wrong, imo, with choosing to vote for those films that appear on other ballots. otherwise i think some scfz favorite directors might fare worse than they probably should. that said, i would feel weird about people actively campaigning for votes, or colluding to elevate a film in the rankings -- luckily that's never happened here, and i'm sure it won't, but i remember it did happen on mubi with that film karl always makes fun of that i've never seen.

some titles aren't in english at letterboxd, i marked those w an asterisk (aside from the epstein which reverted to french title there). also 'scattered clouds' the most common title of that naruse, is listed as 'two in the shadow' but since i saw it in someone else's list i decided to keep their title of choice. and 'dainah the mixture' just seems wrong

multiple entries: akerman, monteiro, shimizu, kaul, kautner, barnet, lubitsch, ford, sirk, obayashi, tsui and to. i'm not going to look at this again or i'll want to change everything!! now i guess i better start rating for DtC :p

Yeah, it's hard. I have about 2000 favorites, but I've been doing similar lists a lot over the past 15 years, so one gets used to trimming down again and again. :o  :D

the deadline isn't strict, i'd rather get ballots from everyone than rush out the results. if anyone needs more time, just let me know how long you need

it really doesn't matter too much, because i don't use the year when looking for duplicate votes, but i always include the year when posting the final results, so when people don't include the year i have to look it up myself. so don't stress about it, use whatever source you like!
