Tarzan the Ape Man (1932)
Tarzan and His Mate (1934)

Bit of a snooze when Tarzan and Jane aren't together on the screen being all pre-code chummy and half naked. That loincloth in the second film was quite outrageous, hard to focus on anything else.

i rewatched ABSOLUTE GIGANTEN three times in 24 hours - first in german, then in english, then in german again - for language studies. here is my review written in basic and presumably flawed and/or goofy-sounding german:

what google says i said:
I'm learning German. to become more fluent, I will sometimes watch my favorite German films with German subtitles. in these cases, I record my thoughts in German

I first saw this film in 2014. I liked it immediately. for a sad boy like me, the film is perfect. nothing could be improved. every moment touches me. Floyd is me. his restlessness is a feeling I have had since my first days

now I'm older. my days of emergency room visits and black eyes and teenage stupidity are over. but the feeling is still there. and yet, it is somehow also abandoned. it's right there, but it's in the past. I tried to remember the moments. to repeat as Floyd does

but ultimately, the song continues. I know that. and I also know now that it will end at some point. it must. I will still try to capture the moments

it might actually be my favourite movie

i know the movie is about MaLe FrIeNdShIp or whatever, but i actually think the floyd/telsa relationship is the glue of the film and in some ways its most integral. god, that scene in the elevator. i weep endlessly for them both

The actress is brilliant and I can't believe a monologue can keep me riveted to my seat for the whole duration!

Basically it's the story about this female public defence lawyer from a humble working-class background and how she's raped by an office colleague, a lawyer from a privileged background, and how his fellow upper-class colleagues at work close ranks to ruin her life.

SONGS FROM THE SECOND FLOOR, Roy Andersson's masterwork beheld on the big screen at the Museum of the Moving Image, and as relevant and powerful as ever. MOMI is running a complete Andersson retrospective, including the elusive GILIAP which bad boy I'll be damn sure to not get away from me. Alas, some of the screenings will be held in the miniscule Bartos Screening Room, which means I might as well trot out the Blu-Rays and watch them on TV. Still, an Andersson retrospective is a gift that I'm not gonna look in the mouth.
These matters are best disposed of from a great height. Over water.

It was my birthday yesterday and as such I convinced my found-family (my partner, my metamour, and their two long-term housemates) to watch The Shop Around the Corner with me which is one of my favourite films I'd watched for the first time this year when I first saw it a few months ago. It not only held up to my memory of it but everyone loved it, people even clapped after it finished and my partner said they need to actually watch more old movies with me. I've been getting my metamour into art films this past year, but if we're ever watching something as the five of us all together it normally just ends up being some blockbuster or whatever...so convincing people to watch something much older and much more my speed and everyone loving it made me very happy.

First movie of the year was Monkey Business (1931) off TCM. What do people make of the Marx Brothers round here? I've never found my way into appreciating their work much, but I wonder if I'll be able to now. In any case, this was the first time a viewing of a Marx Brothers movie has really clicked for me from start to finish.

Yes! I took a course on Finnish Cinema over a decade ago, and the teacher showed all and only the most depressing movies. Eventually, we started to ask for an explanation, and she indicated that it was just a part of Finnish culture to love depressing movies (whether true or not, I don't know—it's not as if there aren't Finnish comedies, she just didn't show them).
