2001 Poll 2.0

Post by Evelyn Library P.I. »

Choose your favourite films from 2001 (according to IMDB).

Each person can vote for up to 20 films. Do not feel compelled to fill the maximum allowable number.

Twenty-film ballots can be formatted as follows:
- Five tiers of four films each, 4/4/4/4/4; scored 5-4-3-2-1 pts/film/tier
- Four tiers of five films each, 5/5/5/5; scored 4.5-3.5-2.5-1.5 pts/film/tier
- Two tiers of ten films each, 10/10; scored 4-2 pts/film/tier
- No tiers, unranked; scored 3 pts/film
- A 20-film three-tier ballot is not possible

A tiered ballot can include less than 20 films, but in that case the total number of films must still be able to be factored by the number of tiers, so:
- A five tier ballot can include only 20, 15, 10, or 5 films
- A four tier ballot can include only 20, 16, 12, 8, or 4 films
- A three tier ballot (scored 5-3-1) can include only 18, 15, 12, 9, 6, or 3 films
- A two tier ballot can include only 20, 18, 16, 14, 12, 10, 8, 6, 4, or 2 films
- Ballots that are 19, 17, 13, 11, 7 or 1 films must be no tiers

Users are urged to post their provisional lists as soon as possible, so that others can use them for recommendations. You may revise your lists at any point prior to the deadline.

Deadline for 2001 ballots will be Thursday, November 30th at roughly midnight EST.

This is a super-weak year for me, but I'm starting with these:

The Confession - The Zeki
De Ida Y Vuelta - Salvador Aguirre
The Devil's Backbone - del Toro
Distance - Kore-eda
Electric Dragon 80000 V
Eloge D'Amour - Godard
Escrito En El Cuerpo De La Noche - Hermosillo
Forklift Driver Klaus: First Day On The Job - AStefan Prehn
Fulltime Killer - To
Ghosts Of Mars - Carpenter
La Libertad - Alonso
Pachito Rex - Fabian Hoffman
Suicide Club - Sono
Zubeidaa - Shyam Benegal

I hope to replace 80% of them by watching "finally, some decent fucking movies..."
The opposite of 'reify' is... ?

Images of the Orient: "Vandalic Tourism", dir. Yervant Gianikian, Angela Ricci Lucchi

Image

Image

Working with old film from the 1920s of upper-classpeoples' trips to India during turbulent political times, each frame asserts the exploitation and the inequality that was rampant at the time, precisely, a "vandalic tourism". The criticality arises from simple ex- and juxta-position, sociopolitical contrasts present within the archival footage are allowed to speak for themselves as the film is slowed down to a hypnotic degree. It's worth mentioning the interesting usage of experimental film treatments to some of the footage which is always used to highlight these inequalities.

Image

Image

Quite a good score too. Some french text is present at the beginning of the film (I just used google translate for it), and some chants in french are also present throughout. Sadly no subs for those.

You Shoot, I Shoot, dir. Pang Ho-cheung

Image

I haven't watched many dark comedies, I usually don't seek them out really, but this was great fun. Even though the humor at some parts was weird I still had a blast by the end.

The shots are fun too.

AI has a good shot at becoming my #1 of the year tbh. So much dread in that film, but in a great way. What a performance by Haley Joel Osment too.

Southern Comfort was also definitely worth watching. A documentary about a trans man dying of ovarian cancer, and is basically a slice of life depiction of his final days. It won't be in my final list, but if that sentence sounds like something that would interest you then you'll most likely get something out of it.

Bintou, dir. Fanta Régina Nacro

Bintou wants to send her daughter to school but her husband is not at all receptive to the idea, to the point of being abusive. The husband battles his internalized misogyny and patriarchy from other members of the community (including his mother) throughout the film as Bintou becomes increasingly financially independent of her husband.

Image

Even though the underlying subject matter is serious the film is pretty lighthearted in tone, even comedic at times! I didn't find that jarring, though. However, I disagreed with the final takeaway of the film, that Bintou should be "happy to have such a loving husband". His concern (and patriarchal manifestation of 'love') is certainly apparent throughout the film, but the husband is abusive until its climax. So one's left to ponder over traditional societal relations and moral values in Burkinabé society.

Image

Very interesting film, the pacing is quite fast but I have to imagine this might be caused by budget restrictions. I enjoyed it overall!
