SCFZ poll: Archie Mayo
SCFZ poll: Archie Mayo
Polling the films of Archie Mayo
The rules:
- your list can include no more than half* of the Mayo films you've seen, up to a maximum of 8. So if you've seen 6 films, you can vote for 3, and if you've seen 20, you can vote for up to 8.
* If you've seen an odd number, you can round up when deciding the length of your ballot -- e.g if you've seen 7, you can vote for 4, and if you've seen 15, you can vote for the maximum of 8.
- i'll assume ballots are ranked unless you tell me otherwise. unranked ballots are fine.
- deadline for ballots: next Friday, in seven days, whatever day that is

Archie Mayo! Surprised he hadn't been polled before. A recurring name for Warners in the '30s, which is my favourite decade for my favourite major Hollywood studio. Interesting to know how his reputation might be different if his lost film Convention City was still around.
Seen 5, but will hopefully watch more for the poll.

Mayo's unbeatable on the kind of urban-culture/unambitious but tight Warner-Bro programmers that defined their early-thirties output. Pretty spotty outside that niche, though.

seen only 1 which was about 25 year ago, so I don't remember much...
Totally unknown filmmaker for me. Also never read anything about him.

Hi there flip. Assuming this is still open...
I've seen 5. Three of them don't stand out in my memory, but I liked these two:
1. 'THE PETRIFIED FOREST' - 8/10
2. 'ILLICIT' - 6.5 OR 7/10

roger - yes the poll is still open! and especially with a director as underseen as mayo, it's great to get more ballots.
i'll be keeping all of the current polls open until we figure out if we can resolve the technical issues on the site, because it's hard to run a poll when people can't edit their ballots when they watch new things, and i won't start any new polls for the same reason
