if anyone is interested in how close the votes were near the top, these were the point totals:

The Favourite - 59 pts
The Other Side of the Wind - 56 pts
Burning - 46 pts
Kaala - 34 pts
The Ballad of Buster Scruggs - 31.5 pts
Cold War - 30 pts
Pariyerum Perumal - 28 pts

and then the next nine films all had between 20 and 23 pts.

and a note for josiah - i elected not to count that tv mini-series, i don't have any great justification for that except that it was the only tv miniseries that got a vote, so it seemed out of place (unlike last year, when twin peaks got several votes). hope that's cool!

Thanks for putting this all together, flip!

Somewhat disappointed with the #1 pick. I loved Lanthimos’ previous two films, but The Favourite felt too clever by half.

I'm pleased to know that I singlehandedly made The Princess Switch appear in the top 50 of an otherwise very respectable list of learned cinephile's favourite films of 2018.

Thanks for tallying it all up, flip! :) Already excited thinking of what 2019 ballots will bring...

one last comment about the poll: our best-of-the-year lists are always varied and unusual with a blend of commercial cinema (some widely appreciated, some not), world film, experimental film, and obscurities. but this year seemed especially diverse - there was almost no overlap among any of the ballots. so lots of films on the list only received a single vote, which i guess means the list reflects all of our tastes somewhere or other. outside of the few films at the top of the list, the only other films about which there seemed to be a consensus was film from india. the voters familiar with indian cinema seemed to agree almost completely about which films from that country were best this year, and a few achieved a very high placing in our poll. i'm happy to see those films (and a few other almost unseen films like the grand bizarre) near the top of the list, because they'll be unfamiliar to a lot of the letterboxd people who see the list there (and also to me!).

what's really surprising is not only are all three films in the top ten from tamil film industry but all have same composer and producers...
