Obama just released his Fifteen favourite films of 2018 list.

Annihilation
Black Panther
BlacKkKlansman
Blindspotting
Burning
The Death of Stalin
Eighth Grade
If Beale Street Could Talk
Leave No Trace
Minding the Gap
The Rider
Roma
Shoplifters
Support the Girls
Won't You Be My Neighbour

Now I feel like coming up with the fifteen best films to the left of this list.

Somebody better tell Barack that he's breaking the rules, choosing 2017 movies for his 2018 list. You can't just make up the rules as you go along, who does that guy think he is, the president or something? Jeez...

Despite the presence of two of the year’s worst, Annihilation and Blindspotting, and two of the most overrated, The Rider and Won’t You Be My Neighbor, that’s a very respectable list. I’m quite impressed that he’s seen Burning, Shoplifters, and Minding the Gap.

Of the 126 2018 films I’ve seen, these were my favorites:

1.) Roma
2.) Burning
3.) Thunder Road
4.) The Other Side of the Wind
5.) The Favourite
6.) Bisbee ‘17
7.) The Last Race
8.) First Man
9.) First Reformed
10.) Shirkers
11.) If Beale Street Could Talk
12.) Minding the Gap
13.) Leave No Trace
14.) Isle of Dogs
15.) Dangerous on the Way
16.) Fahrenheit 11/9
17.) Cold War
18.) Baby Brother
19.) Mission: Impossible - Fallout
20.) Monrovia, Indiana

watched maari 2 over the winter break, not as great as the first film, but that film's subversive trick can only be done once. this normalizes maari as a masala hero a little more while still managing to keep the odd idea intact.

but mostly saying this because the big rowdy baby fantasy number, choreographed by prabhu deva, is finally up -

I've been home for two weeks after a month in Europe and it's only now that I'm getting back to my old routine. I hardly saw anything new in all this time, except for Lee's BURNING (2018) the other week on the big screen (as part of a current local film festival). My, I was so impressed by it, and it even actually managed to disturb me somewhat.

Hope we get more time for this 2018 poll. I really need it. Trying to get Ortega's EL ANGEL right now.

So far I have these on my list, in no order:

Burning (Lee)
Buster Scruggs (Cohen)
Roma (Cuarón)
Private Life (Jenkins)

Anyway, nice to be back with my movie peeps!

I'll be adding a few more 2018 films to my list soon. I'm gonna see at least 4 more in the next week or so. I'll probably publish my final 2018 ranked list at the end of March.
Especially looking forward to seeing The Favourite, Cold War, Shoplifters.

I saw The Favourite and Cold War yesterday at a cinema.

I enjoyed both of them. I think quite a few good films have come out of 2018. Nothing spectacular, but some very well done stuff at least. I've heard good things about Shoplifters. I'll see it soon.
