let's go with feyder if he's got the views. i'm just happy to have finally picked some directors that work. :) i'll try to keep the others in mind for the future unless someone else proposes them.

i don't know fisher's work well enough to say whether the results are surprising or expected, though there were four films that got the main concentration of support. one unusual feature of the results, especially when there wasn't a huge number of votes - there were no ties at all until 9th place (edit - that's no longer true, after a late ballot) :

results
1. The Devil Rides Out (1968) -- 18 pts
2. The Mummy (1959) -- 15 pts
2. Dracula (1958) -- 15 pts
4. The Hound of the Baskervilles (1959) -- 14 pts
5. The Revenge of Frankenstein (1958) -- 6 pts
6. The Curse of the Werewolf (1961) -- 5 pts
7. So Long at the Fair (1950) -- 4 pts
8. The Curse of Frankenstein (1957) -- 3 pts
9. The Brides of Dracula (1960) -- 2.4 pts
10. Stolen Face (1952) -- 2 pts
10. The Astonished Heart (1950) -- 2 pts
12. Murder by Proxy (1954) -- 1.1 pt
13. The Gorgon (1964) -- 1 pts
13. Frankenstein Created Woman (1967) -- 1 pt
13. The Phantom of the Opera (1962) -- 1 pt
16. The Two Faces of Dr Jekyll (1960) -- 0.5 pts
17. The Earth Dies Screaming (1964) -- 0.3 pts

Yeah, Fisher is great and his DRACULA is exceptional in all the ways nrh describes and quotes. Haven't seen it in decades, but it's sensuousness and sets and colors linger on...
Need to see more, though.

01. Dracula (1958)
02. The Brides of Dracula (1960)

Fisher seen: 4

The poll was sorta surprising for The Mummy edging out Dracula, but that's been remedied a bit. The Devil Rides Out would be a bigger surprise taking the top slot if the poll was done with a wider user base maybe, but Devil tends to get notice among cinephiles who watch a wider amount of films than Dracula, the more essential to the genre flick.

I'm also surprised by the high placing of The Mummy. Never would have thought it has such a high following (compared to the other top spots).

more surprising to me is that the frankenstein films didn't rank higher, since that cycle of movies i think is probably the single great argument for fisher as a major director. just re-watched curse of frankenstein last night and it's a genuinely remarkable movie, and my memory is that the films just get more striking as the sequence goes on.

Yeah, everyone seems to be talking about those Frankenstein films nowadays! (or what used to be nowadays during the last 20 years :) ).
Need to watch more of those, seen one only so far, and long ago at that.
