Yeah, a brief extension would be great. I forgot about Children of the Beehive until I saw it listed again by ofrene, so I need to at least finish that before the end.

Also due to not having internet access for the next couple of days, I'm afraid 1902 is completely out of the window. Only because I went on a mad downloading spree last week is cramming 48 at all possible.

bah is this extra time worth it?

blanche fury could have been a ragingly lush, torrid hot technicolor mess of the cathy/heathcliff kind, if only the script hadn't been dire and stewart granger wasn't THE WORST ACTOR IN THE WORLD

oh well, at least i got an allégret in for this year (and he does his ample best with what he's got) if not the one everyone else is watching.

(has anyone else seen blanche fury? did the ending funnel out through someone's intestines? maybe it was an umbilical cord? just....what?)

Jan 2nd it is, then, since there haven't been any horses whinnying. I'll open a thread for January's poll on 1/1 and tot up the results for both December polls the fol;lowing day.

Not defending the over-use of prostitutes in movies, but I would like to point out that they (also) serve a purpose in politicized cinema, as a way of representing the end-stage of Patriarchal oppression, "women under capitalism" thematics...

I've enjoyed everything I've seen from Allégret so far, that one, the brooding Such a Pretty Little Beach and The Proud and the Beautiful which landed Jean-Paul Sartre an Oscar nomination.

rischka wrote: Mon Dec 30, 2019 4:10 am so i watched the allegret and it's rather good, esp the ending. simone signoret sadly kinda got typecast as a prostitute after her success in this. marcel dalio has a fine turn as her brutal pimp -- not a role i expected from him! i'm a sucker for a seedy seaport as greennui well knows. also impressive was the use of french, german, english, italian and flemish (film is set in antwerp) i do generally agree w/sally that the percentage of films about prostitutes is ridiculously high and this fetish grows tiresome

The Italian actor had so much Jean Gabin energy that it's almost hard to believe it wasn't Gabin.

okay, i'm all done. watched 61% (42 films) of the ones i planned to watch for this year, which is a pretty good score, only comparable to the 1920's polls, so i guess i liked 48. main conclusions are that compared to the joyful smut & sleaze in un-american films, the code made films ridiculously childish. also that everyone had only just started to process the enormity of the war, and that specifically it drove helmut käutner insane:

bit late to talk up the kautner seeing as i only watched it today, but it really is nuts. i have no idea where he got the budget for all those sets & costumes (the film is pretty much an extended dream sequence set in heaven and hell) and kautner even acts in it in quite a large role. literally every second is screenshottable.

also would have liked to talk up kalpana, but only if you like communisty dance-based films, with again, lovely nuts dream sequences.

and the rodríguez was wonderfully relentless. is it bad? it can get worse! and worse! weeeeeee

It's hard for me to take Rodriguez seriously, but the largest audience seemed to loooooove him, so you have to factor that in. I never know quite what hat to wear when I watch his movies. Miguel Inclan smoking marijuana and beating the old wheelchair lady to half-death was memorable...

watched curtiz's romance on the high seas, really enjoyed it, and added it to my list! who knew that under the good girl image of doris day lurked a saucy hottie? made me appreciate day way more than i did before, like what what's up, doc? did for me and streisand. would obvs make a great double bill with gentlemen prefer blondes

meanwhile, almost done with abbott and costello meet frankenstein. probs won't make my final list, unless the twist ending is that dracula, frankenstein, and the wolf man kill abbott and costello, in which case it'd jump to the top of my list. don't ask me why i went with aacmf over the snake pit, but i did, and it's a choice i'll have to live with the rest of this new year...
